Happy Birthday MP3!

On July 14th the file format MP3 will turn 10 years old. On this day in 1995 it was proclaimed in an email that the extension “.mp3” would be used as an acronym for “MPEG Audio Layer 3”. The MP3 format took 40 engineers years to create at Fraunhofer IIS in Germany. This revolutionary audio codec was way ahead of its time in 1992, when it was then standardized. In fact, in 1992 the industry thought it was too complex for practical applications. But today it is the undisputed standard in the digital music world.
