The official release of the Connect is today, but has been leaked to the shelves of Circuit City over the past few days. I have had one in my hands for a week or so now and so far I am impressed. It really is part of a new breed of MP3 players- it is almost a desktop media player to go with a dash of a social community. In other words, it is the MusicGremlin done right. There are still some issues, but I will reserve further discussion for the full review to come in the near future.
SanDisk has partnered with Yahoo! for internet radio (LAUNCHcast), direct downloads (Yahoo! Music) , social connectivity (Yahoo! ID), and wireless photo viewing (Fickr). To take full advantage of all of these features you will need a Yahoo ID and a paid Yahoo! Music subscription. However, most of the features such as the internet radio, Flickr, and Yahoo ID are very functional without the need to fork over a monthly subscription fee. But if you are thinking about picking up this player, plan on buying a Yahoo! Unlimited Music subscription, because the direct downloads along with friend recommendation features are what makes this player.

Nice to see SanDisk doing something right with the Wi-fi on this one. Though it hurts not to have access to the Internet Radio of your choice.I’d be hot-footing it to my local bigbox store to pick one up if I could use it for listening to Radio Paradise. Until then, probably not…Nice preview Grahm. let us know what else to find after playing with it a bit…..

The wheel is smooth. Battery life is going to vary quite a bit depending on wi-fi usage ect… I will try to pull together a full review by the end of the week… i got two to try out the sharing function… check out the forum for a few more comments…

It looks good but it’s not for me. It doesn’t have a microphone does it? I was hoping this with Rockbox, a feed reader/podcatcher and microphone would make an excellent podcasting device or VoIP phone. Oh well.

The big thing for me is that you don’t need a PC. If you hear a track you love you can download it straight away. We all know that if this was an Apple innovation, they’d sell by the bucketload.

I really want a device that scans my rss feeds and downloads the mp3s automatically. It would be killer, go to work, take the bus home with podcasts to kill the time.

would this be any good in Australia? most wifi networks and music stuff really seem to USA oriented. there are wifi networks here but would i have to pay for the internet radio?

josh: Hi Josh, Yahoo has quite a few radio stations for free…I’m not sure how many exactly but I think it is around 50. Please don’t quote me on that though, you should check out music.yahoo.com for more info.As for the Sansa Connect working in Australia, I’m not sure because Wifi radio standards seem to be individual to specific countries or continents (Europe, NA, Asia, etc). I’m not 100% sure about this, but I know we’ve had trouble with a European wifi router in a nearby office that wreaks havoc on our corporate wifi. If someone can confirm that a router they bought in australia works with US sourced devices, then my confidence level would rise. Until that time, I would recommend holding off.

online subscriptions are zero interest items for me, but the box looks fantastic. Does SanDisk play lossless yet?
