Cowon D2 Officially Joins the 16GB Club

cd2 Cowon D2 Officially Joins the 16GB Club

About a month ago we speculated on whether or not a 16GB Cowon D2 was in the works. The player has now shown up on jetmall.net which is Cowon’s official US reseller, so it’s safe to say this is for real.

The biggest surprise has to be the price – and by that I don’t mean it’s high. The 16GB D2 sells for only $240 with free shipping, which isn’t the cheapest 16GB option around but also far from the most expensive. Add $70 bucks and you’ll get a 16GB SDHC card that will make it a total of 32GB for $310.

To take a quick look at the rest of the 16GB club, the current prices are: Creative Zen 16GB $180 (Amazon), Sansa View 16GB $150 (Amazon), Sony NWZ-A729 16GB $290 (Amazon) and Sony NWZ-A829 16GB $320 (Amazon). The Samsung P2 16GB has just been released in Europe and is expected to arrive in the US soon for about $300.

Is it just me or does it feel a bit too late for this?Maybe it’s just me but like earlier in the year I would have bought this 16gb version but if the capacity was the only thing upgraded I’m really not impressed..I mean where’s the D3? and I feel if I wait a month or two some hotter products will show up in the market i don’t know.

aznxkpx88, I have to agree with you, especially since the D2 has memory expansion anyways what more is the extra 8 GB? It may have been an exciting release a few months ago, but I think they should have just waited till the D3 comes out for their 16 GB and hopefully 32 GB memory.

I think the player we can see on Jetmall is not actualy an 16 GB player!!Maybe I’m wrong but I’m almost sure that is the 8GB version with an 8Gb card included..Please check once again the web site and the specifications of the product.

It’s not too late for those people who don’t own a D2 and want one of the better players out there. D3? People are still waiting on the X7. Rumours are just that, rumours. If I just wait another month or two, something better will be out. That’s almost always the case with technology. It’ll certainly save me a lot of money if I keep waiting but where’s the fun in that? A total of 32 GB is nice if you use FLAC. There’s of course the pesky file limit so more than 32 GB is pointless if they don’t fix that. I’m also not convinced that this isn’t the 8 + 8 GB thing. I would have expected a news item on Cowon Global or Cowon America.

I just talked to JetMall and they said that it’s 16 GB internal. They have another “product” which is a 8 GB D2 with 8 GB SDHC card for $20 less so they aren’t the same “product”. I just ordered the 16 GB so I guess I’ll find out soon enough.
