dell zing Dell’s New MP3 Player May Come As Soon As September

The WSJ is reporting that Dell may be back in the game as soon as September with a player that is currently being referred to as “The Zing”. Zing is a company that Dell bought not too long ago that helps users discover new music. So with that its assumed that Dell’s new player will be tied to a music downloading subscription like service.

Dell’s last MP3 player episode was back in 2003 with a few of their own MP3 players ODMed by Creative, but was relatively unsuccessful. The details on the new player are a mystery to me, but I would tend to lean towards the Zing not doing so well. The market is crowded and no one seems to be interested in a wireless music service.

This better not be like the Sansa Connect. I’m still crying over the Y! Music UNL termination. I only had the damn thing for three months!Zing was relatively useless on the Connect, I seldom used the “Make a Mix like this Song” feature.

I wonder if they’ll develop in house, go back to Creative, or get someone else. The old Dell DJ’s were nice, although the real Creatives seemed to have better sound quality.

I am really stoked about Dell’s upcoming re-entry into the music player market. I love my Dell DJ it is so easy to use unlike my Meizu! Hopefully Dell will keep it simple.

I was a big fan of the Yahoo Music Service and bought into the Sansa Connect. If you like to have custom mixes at your fingertips, this was the player. Hopefully, Dell can do more with it. My only fear is that any music service will suffer the same fate as Y!. Maybe Dell needs to partner with Napster or Rhapsody, as they seem to have staying power. Subscription, IMHO is the way to go. Only time will tell I guess…
