When I fly I usually pack several MP3 players but only one for the seat since is such a pain to dig around in those tiny seats. In the past I have used a simple soft case to hold the player and the Shure SE530s (Amazing isolation and sound quality for flying, ‘eff Bose!) all in one neat package. Though I did always worry about smashing it in between a seat or dropping it in the boarding and unboarding chaos.
So I stumbled on this little gem today at Best Buy. It’s made for the iPod (Ew, I know right?) but will work with anything that will fit. There is also a headphone cable leading from the inside to a plug on the outside for waterproof use.
What makes this case interesting to many of the audio enthusiast is that it would make a perfect case for a headphone amp, plus player combo. There are a few example photos in the Top 5 of 2008 list or check out the headphone amp forum. Though the cable connecting to the outside is a bit cheap for higher end setups, but the rubber back can easily be removed and better plugs can be installed. A military grade and audiophile grade Neutrik plug might be a great upgrade for those who want a little extra something.
One quick note that the Zune 120 just barely fits with the audio jack plugged in. It will close just barely and I wouldn’t be comfortable putting stress on the headphone jack for extended periods. It does fit perfectly without the jack plugged in. The Zune 4/8/16 fits lovely as you can see from the photo.
You can find this case at Amazon for around $30- very reasonable for such a rugged case. Same price at Best Buy as well.
