archos3 Archos Announces Touch Screen Player

Seems like everyone’s jumping on the touch screen wagon lately. Samsung just updated their P2 with the P3 and Cowon’s S9 is making friends all over. Archos wants in on the fun and just announced the Archos 3, a medium sized players with a 3″ touch screen.

Specs wise they don’t disclose much, but a 8GB storage capacity and 14 hours of battery life isn’t exactly something to celebrate. Among random features they mention photo viewing, voice recording, a stopwatch and a calendar. Not a single mention of video anywhere, which isn’t a good sign. Price and release date is unknown, and frankly completely uninteresting if this is all they can come up with.

After reading the headline, my first thought was “Finally, an Archos video player that isn’t the size of a cinder block.” Too bad, I guess.

Might be just a rebranded Chinese Teclast M26, from the looks of it. Yawn, Archos.

What would be “something to celebrate”? 8 gigs is enough for about 90% of people. I think we need to abandone our notion that every generation of mp3 player will have double the capacity of the previous. I have 16 gig capacity on my player but only have about 8 gigs on it, and quite frankly this is a lot of music to manage and sort through. I think the Archos 5 is a remarkably nice looking and verstile device, as is the iPhone (or iTouch if you’re on a budget) – do you think these are worth celebrating? What more could you ask for? I’ve yet to see something that beats my Samsung YP-t8, in terms of listening to long recorded radio shows, and this only has 1 gig capacity but which hasn’t diminished my admiration of it – it’s bookmarking feature is the best out there, along with it’s skipping and FF, and the text is readable. The text on most devices is, still, too small, esp the elapsed time display.

I guess since the type of people more likely to frequent this site and have Cowons, Creatives, Archos, etc are higher on the audiophile scale…they can never have too much memory. Many are waiting for 64GB flash players to store their lossless music and videos – which would be something to celebrate.

It’s not a Teclast M26 because that player uses a 2.6″ screen. Also, Tthe M26 was released mid-2008, so Archos would have to be hurting pretty badly to reach back for what is essentially an antique in Chinese MP4 product cycle terms.

The Archos 3 Vision will have video playback as well as TV Out feature built-in the player like old generations. Will also have a FM Radio (that’s new for recent archos players since Ondio) and also a FM Transmitter… while it wont be the bluetooth everyone is including, the fm transmitter is pretty cool cause is even more accessible (despite lacking remote control profile and such. Will also have a stopwatch, calendar and voice recorder. So all of you fearing for video playback, here you have a small alternative to a Video player which can reproduce on TV without any docks
