Cowon Upgrades the E2 Firmware Based on Our Review

cowon iaudio e2 fimrwarefix Cowon Upgrades the E2 Firmware Based on Our Review

The Cowon E2 in my opinion is the best screenless MP3 player on the market, but I did take issue with the fact that there was no way to skip folders. From the Cowon E2 review:

“There is one missing, skip by folder. You can skip to the next track all you want but if you have a lot of tracks it might be rough to find what you want. If there was a way to navigate by folder it would make it much easier to find the music you want. It could be implemented one of two ways: a long press on the volume buttons or a combination of skip scan + the power button.”

Cowon sent me an email this morning to let me know this was updated:

“After reading your review, we decided to reflect your advice on our E2 firmware.”

Though I think that the solution that Cowon offers is better than the two methods I offered in my review. It is a similar solution to how it is done on Rockbox. Here is how it now works:

“To skip to the next folder, press FF button shortly, and within 2 seconds, press and hold FF button. (you will hear water drop sound) To skip to the previous folder, press REW button shortly, and within 2 seconds, press and hold REW button. (you will hear water drop sound) – Move to the first song if there is no folder. – Move to the first part of the song if there is only one song. – Skip by folder feature is not supported in shuffle mode.”

this makes me have even more respect for cowon, that they actually listen to not just the poeple that buy their product, but those who USE them. way to go cowon!

Almoxil on February 5, 2010 4:39 PM

Very nice move from Cowon. They sometimes make mistakes with their firmware design choices, but their devices are great; this kind of response only makes me respect them more.

joe on February 5, 2010 4:48 PM

Now if only they would add MPEG4-AVC/h.264 support to ALL their players…

Dreamnine on February 5, 2010 5:32 PM

Thanks a lot, Grahm – this has worked perfectly on both my E2s. Very good of Cowon to listen and respond.

manz on February 5, 2010 7:02 PM

Nice move by cowon, and of course a great effort by anythingbutipod.I’m glad they actually listen to the users.

ashiiya on February 5, 2010 9:09 PM

Wow it’s so great that they took into account the opinions of actual users and used them to improve their player, that’s really awesome.

I’ve never seen a company like Cowon who actually fixed the downsides mentioned in reviews. This definitely is a big ‘Karma+’ for Cowon.I’ve always liked Cowon, and this proofs there’s plenty of reason to (next to the superb SQ/EQ) :)

BoBo on February 6, 2010 12:58 PM

Yeah whatever Cowon…Just give us a player minus the touchpad/touchscreen.Give us Tactile control based player with 32 gigs/ xvid & h264 support… 2.5 inch + screen…Then maybe I’ll buy your stuff.Until then whatever you make is buggy/crappy garbage which needs firmware update every now & then.

Random on February 6, 2010 3:13 PM

@BoBo: how would you know the cowon devices are “buggy/crappy garbage” if you had never bought one?don’t make dumb assumptions like that and don’t contradict yourself especially online because it just makes you look dumb.

joe on February 6, 2010 5:22 PM

@Random probably a person who doesn’t know that xvid is really just MPEG4-SP.Thank you Divx for screwing everybody up on what it means to be compatible with MPEG4-SP/ASP!However, not until recently did the D2 become stable enough that it didn’t crap the database or mess up lyrics (it still does though).HEY COWON, USE THE LYRICS FIELD LIKE THE REST OF THE WORLD AND NOT YOUR CRAPPY VERSION THAT NEVER WORKS!

BoBo on February 6, 2010 7:34 PM

@Random – Yeah ok man! Before you call me dumb you yourself know what you do with your Cowon player.Use it then sit in awe for the firmware update to come to make it more stable. What a pile of garbage…God you gotta love Fanboys…running rampant…Apple fanboys are there but the one’s of other brands especially it’s competitors will do anything to back their product. You don’t understand my post…why should I have the need to buy a Cowon product? I’ve used many of their products & they offer nothing new on the contrary they’re just overly complicated trying to do way to many things & in doing so fail miserably.Your much better off with Samsung,Sandisk, Creative etc. players.Sound quality of Cowon? Please…I’ve heard tons of players & I don’t see what the hubla-hoo is about Cowon players…but then again each to their own.But why would you care anyway? If Cowon polished a turd & sold it to you, You would still buy it.Then again there are a few of us who think, You can polish a turd whichever way you want in the end it’s still a pile of s*!t.

@BoboCowon players are great for a certain type of person: Those who like to customize their user experience. Cowon’s great sound quality comes from the mix of BBE+ and the ability to tailor the EQ to almost exactly what one would want. Along with tailoring music to one’s specific needs, the ability to change the interface with community build ones allows the user to once again customize their user experience. I will gladly admit that the stock interface on most Cowon players is horribly mediocre, but people are able to just change the interface to something that better matches their taste.Along with customization options, one of the greatest things about Cowon players is the wide range of formats they support (meaning users do not have to convert their music). All in all, Cowon players are perfect for a certain type of person, however they are not perfect for the general iPod user, who wants a simple user experience and does not care about SQ.tl dr: Cowon players are great for people who know how to set an EQ properly, and those interested in customizing the players interface.

What makes Cowon’s upgrade special is that they didn’t really need to do anything at all with the E2 – it plays beautifully straight out of the box. That they read this review, took note, then upgraded to include folder selection as well is pretty impressive in my opinion.

Rokas on February 7, 2010 2:02 PM

That makes respect COWON, they actually care what people using their products think… Big + for COWON.

Hi,

Could someone tell me how to create playlist on Cowon E2…

seicean on February 22, 2011 9:36 AM

thanks for the review! i just got my cowon today and in the root folder there are no files like shown on the cowon website. How can I check the firmware version?

Sumit on May 13, 2011 5:00 PM

Thanks for the folder navigation upgrade. This (or lack of this) made me look out for other players. But now I am surely going to buy this.

Braulio on November 1, 2011 12:15 AM

gapless playback would be nice too

Chris on December 3, 2011 12:32 AM

just picked up one of these and I’m fully impressed! I recently bought a Sony portable MP3 player and wish I hadn’t.. so disappointed with the sound quality. It seemed people raved about Cowon sound quality so I decided to give the E2 a go, and sure enough I’m officially a convert.

Of course with it being only a screenless player the downside is navigation. I’m already thinking about spending a bit more for one of their pricier models. Love the design of these things too – it’s good to see someone bringing something a bit different to the portable media player market.

sas on January 16, 2012 8:12 AM

@bobo and other anti cowons Cowon mp3 player are for those who want pure quality audio from thier device. Not for those who spend there money to buy a mp3 player to navigate ui and play, not to listen music. Cowon provides nothing but pure sound quality which is a shit in apple. And design wise e2 is also the best design non screen mp3 player. Its like those who belive sound quality only is how loud music can be played.
