Samsung’s new Galaxy Player differs by either 0.2 or 0.8 inches from its ancestors

sgs42 Samsungs new Galaxy Player differs by either 0.2 or 0.8 inches from its ancestorsIt’s called the Galaxy Player S Wifi 4.2, so its name should be a dead giveaway that it’s slightly larger than the 4.0 and slightly smaller than the 5.0. Also, it’s white/grey-ish instead of black.

Other than that, there really aren’t any big differences to spot between the various models. They all have the same 800 x 480 resolution (in an IPS variety on the 4.2, contrary to Samsung’s usual AMOLED screens), same 1 GHz processor speed, same Android 2.3 operating system, same codec support, same connectivity options, and so on. The new 4.2 still seems to lack HDMI output – an issue users have criticized as one of the biggest shortcomings of the 4.0 and 5.0, and a major drawback of an otherwise nicely specced PMP.

The 4.2 comes with 8 or 16 GB of internal memory, and of course a MicroSD slot to add some more. Its battery holds 1500 mAh, so let the speculations about its run time begin. No release date or street price have been announced yet.

Oh yeah, before I forget it – the 4.2 comes preloaded with some random game. This seems to be a big enough deal to mention it in the specs sheet of the press release.

So no new cpu, no new firmware and no video out, what’s the point Samsung?!

They’re probably trying to keep the price down. Sadly there’s no way this thing is going to have main stream success with a price tag over $200 as that how much an iPod touch coast now a days.

Maybe they released that one with a slightly different design because of the Apple copycat lawsuit(s)?

@nathan The 4″ model right now is $180 on amazon vs the ipod touch at $188.

I never checked the current price of the galaxy players just remembered that the smaller one was going for around $250 when it came out. According to a PC mag article, the 4.2 starting price is $199.99. Apparently the 1 ghz processor that they’re using is actually a bit faster than the 1 GHz processor in the old model and it will evently be upgraded to ICS. I guess with the extra .2 inches and the other two things it’s kind of an upgrade.,2817,2400827,00.asp

They make the claim that it is a dual core Cortex-A9 in there, rather than the single core A8.

What about the battery can it be replaced ?

Never understood the point of these Android PMP’s.

Just get a used smart phone! Paid $150 for a EVO 3D off of Craigslist…Dual core 1.2ghz CPU, awesome GPU, 3D qHD display, awesome cameras (front AND back) with flash, lots of accessories (Otterbox Defender on mine), AND custom ROMs…running ICS on mine right now with no problems!

Maybe its just me, but I couldn’t imagine paying MORE for a PMP with lesser specs in EVERY aspect.

Hell, even something like a 2 year old smart phone has the same specs as this PMP and you can probably find these in the garbage.
