Cowon Z2 might finally reach Western shores

cowonz2 rel Cowon Z2 might finally reach Western shoresThere’s been quite some uncertainty and doubt regarding the international release date of the Plenue Z2, the successor to the D3, and Cowon’s second experiment with Google’s Android operating system. We’ve ranted about it as early as January.

This time it sure took Cowon a lot longer than usually to release a device outside of Korea, but it seems they’re almost there. According to Engadget, an “early May” release date should be possible. Apparently, the 16GB version of the Z2 will only come in white and will go for around $280, the 32GB version will only come in black and go for a slightly painful $320.

Those prices are quite a bit higher than, say, same-sized iPod Touch variants, and a lot more expensive than Samsung’s various Galaxy Players. But if you want BBE sound enhancements, many more tactile buttons than average Android devices offer, and a shnazzy S-AMOLED screen (hopefully a non-Pentile one), then you really don’t have a lot of alternatives. At least the Z2 should be snappy enough to be usable as an all-around Android device, contrary to its severely slow and laggy ancestor, the D3.

Ugh, that black looks nice but 32GB only?!

tel3caster on April 15, 2012 5:38 PM

You wonder if people are still buying these large DAP’s with smartphones being commonplace now.

Martin Sägmüller on April 15, 2012 5:55 PM

Digi_owl, it has a MicroSDHC slot, which allegedly also supports (at least) 64GB SDXC cards.

Matt R on April 15, 2012 10:14 PM

I like black. White looks odd, but so does chasse besides. Does Cowon always go with gimmic to sell? Use external ports cover as stand? Who actually WANTS to do that?

Bruce on April 15, 2012 10:24 PM

Yeh I’m still not convinced, carrying a galaxy S2 and a Z2 around is just silly. All we need is better parts in smartphones and more tactile buttons on smartphones.

Ryan on April 15, 2012 10:58 PM

tel3caster, not everybody owns a smartphones and those that do prefer Cowon over smartphones simply because they offer superior audio quality. Also, there are some people who buys these DAPs primarily for audio. It makes sense since they are not going to pay for something they are primarily designed for use with email and phone calls.

nathan on April 15, 2012 11:50 PM

Yeah, at the current price of $320 the might as well stick a 3G or 4G modem in it and sell it as a sub $500 midrange phone.

Not sure how this will appeal to the average consumner. For less money, a different player can be purchased that can also use BBE. oOr me, this will be a pass.

digi_owl on April 16, 2012 5:56 AM

@tel3caster: Well for me it allows the carry of a inexpensive featurephone that holds little to no risk of getting malware.

@Martin Sägmüller: more that i would love a 16GB black so that it was more affordable. White is not really my thing.

Martin Sägmüller on April 16, 2012 9:14 AM

Digi_owl, ah, I misunderstood you. Same here – I really dislike white gadgets. Having the color tied to the capacity of the player seems like a bad move to me.

Kitford on April 16, 2012 1:09 PM

I did some looking around and there’s also meant to be an 8gb player too. No idea what colour it will be in though. Anybody know?

John on April 16, 2012 5:01 PM

Hey Martin, so are you saying that microsdxc is supported on the Z2? I’d be willing to buy one if I can fit a 128gb card sometime in the near future…

Matt R on April 16, 2012 6:49 PM

If it truly is unbrickable, as some reviewer online says. I would buy it simply to have cowon quality sound with extras. Gotta admit, those iriver10 thingys are not cheap. If you have smartphone already, maybe look for second best item except with portability. My thought.

Martin Sägmüller on April 16, 2012 9:08 PM

John, all currently available SDXC cards still adhere to the old SD specs and are backwards-compatible with SDHC slots – you just have to reformat them from ExFAT to FAT32 to make them readable. As far as I know, the Z2 might even support the NTFS file system, which lets you load files larger than 4GB.

Matt R on April 17, 2012 7:42 PM

Not to spam this forum… if you’re uncertain as to the Z2 capability, go to Cowon’s Korean site. Says pretty much everything important in terse English statements. I’d like to be able to Bing Translate the rest, ‘cept that it’s all within images. Limitations? Yet to be see, of course.
Pretty excited about this improved version of D3, which I expected around about this time.

Al luna on April 19, 2012 2:01 PM

Martin, are you saying that I can use a 64g on this player or that it will recognize the card but only able use 32 of the 64g’s?

Matt R on April 22, 2012 7:35 PM

You should know that Z2 is now on Cowonglobal website. They are clearly getting ready to release. I would not scoff too much at this Sophmore achievement. Though most people say in this American Creche, it’s the sophmore release of a band’s album which determines their future… or lack theiren

digi_owl on April 30, 2012 10:38 AM

Both the 16 and 32 models are showing up in Norwegian online stores now, tho not in stock yet.

Matt R on April 30, 2012 10:32 PM

Are you suggesting that time zone matters, on first of march? Why does Cowon site say Fat 16/32 only supported in sd card, and also say that it is NTFS above? Does this suggest that it is actually Fat32 compatible, but only on sdcard? Where is the ac adapter, where is the headphones? My questions.

zunehdkid on May 7, 2012 3:52 AM

Just ordered one! 16 GB white model. Can’t wait, ill update u once i get it!

digi_owl on May 27, 2012 9:09 PM

@Matt R: I am guessing it only supports the FAT variants for the SD but uses NTFS on the internal storage to allow for files that are more than 4GB in size.

Raza on May 28, 2012 2:48 AM

I’m just waiting for this thing to come out b/c the J3 might get a lower in price …

vangooey on June 6, 2012 10:30 AM

it was slated for release ‘early May’ it’s now early June, with no official release date

Martin Sägmüller on June 6, 2012 12:55 PM

Vangooey, it is already released. Available on Amazon and all the other usual retailers.

duo on June 7, 2012 10:12 PM
