Cowon’s X9 is obviously a “Super Player”

product banner x9 Cowons X9 is obviously a Super Player

Cowon announced the X9 – nicknamed “Super Player” – which would make sense as a logical upgrade/sidestep to last year’s X7. But actually it’s more of a rehash of the ancient O2 PMP, released four years ago, in 2008 (ignoring the newer V5′s existence in several aspects).

The X7 is a 80-160GB HDD player with Bluetooth capabilites, the new X9 is a flash memory player without Bluetooth, but a MicroSD slot instead. Internal capacities of the X9 go up to 32GB – same as the ancient O2. Both the X7 and X9 have embarrassingly bad screen resolutions of 480×272 at 4.3″ – same as the ancient O2. Seems Cowon had a few old resistive touch screens left over to recycle (the slightly less ancient V5 HD in comparison had a much more reasonable 800×480 resolution at 4.7″, but by today’s standards that is the extreme lower limit for comparable screen sizes as well).

Additional tactile buttons for FFWD/REW/skip might make the X9 a more desirable player for on the go than the X7, which only had a unified menu/play/pause and two volume buttons. Cowon claims a battery life of up to 110 hours for audio and 13 hours for video on the X9. If real-life usage comes close to these synthetic benchmarks, it would be quite amazing for nomads and globetrotters. Cowon’s usual plethora of supported file formats and BBE sound enhancements are of course not missing from the X9. An additional annoyance is Cowon’s use of a proprietary USB connector instead of a standard mini/microUSB port.

iAudiophile moderator Kizune posted a comparison chart of the X7′s and X9′s differences, for your perusal.

110 hour battery life…..that’s gotta be JK98-worthy!

Jojexy on July 14, 2012 12:30 PM

480*272 LCD on a 4.3 inch screen? At least make it so that it’s 800*480 AMOLED screen! Also, why can’t Cowon make a 64GB version of this! I would rather put a 160GB hd than 32GB of flash. This is supposed to be a super player!

guess cowon invented a time machine… they’re obviously going backwards in time…
embarrassing…

steinburger1109 on July 14, 2012 8:16 PM

Why does Cowon insist on being YEARS behind the times? I remember when they made players as good as the J3… Now all they can do is take steps backwards!

Bruce on July 15, 2012 9:43 PM

It must be like the author said that they have left over parts and dont want to throw them away.

GN-0015 on July 16, 2012 7:29 PM

Super? Yeah right…

kredig on July 17, 2012 3:15 PM

sounds nice but the screen is quite back from the old days…but probably a better screen would increace the price significantally for this size.
but good to see that cowon does not release new players with android onoly.
@al luna: the a5 is already released but in korea only. take a look at export prive

Haing in there.

Almost everything that came after the J3 ist absolutely crap…Cowon needs to get some Features like HD Screens, Wireless, Bluetooth that pairs with stuff, and much more.

ovisis on August 21, 2012 1:56 AM

Yeah, that is pretty embarrassing. My original D2 is still going after all these years. Hail to the D2!

Who cares about screen… it’s all about SOUND

OMG those replies :( …I will tell you why this is a GREAT player: it has flash in stead of a “harddisk”-memory which makes the player lighter and safer (less chance of loosing data), the screen resolution is low, yeah, ofcourse it is: the battery hates high resolution (amoled) screens as well as that stupid android. This player has outstanding music quality, an outstanding battery-life, the possibility to watch 13 hours of video in stead of those great ipods (lmfao) with their great screens and 4 hour-limit on video. This player also had buttons on the side.So easy..Forget that J3, it’s impossible to buy.So you need an alternative player and this player is great for music, easy enough to operate and when you really want to watch some southpark-videos on a long flight you can.As an extra feature. So no, I for sure don’t need an “amoled screen”.
If you don’t like it: buy an ipod..great screen!! lol.

I think it sounds great too! Otherwise having trouble loading my album covers to show up with my songs etc. can’t get through for support because they require a password that they keep saying will be sent to email etc. never happened. Oh well! i did buy it for the sound!

Had a problem with the USB cable connection, if you can’t download, then you can’t play.

Hope another one will work better.
