anyone know anything about the 120gb 5mm Toshiba MK1231GAL?
I thought I would get in first.

Toshiba Corp. today announced the world's first dual-platter 240GB HDD (MK2431GAH).

According to the Toshiba website:

"Toshiba, the pioneer in small form factor hard disk drives (HDDs), continues to deliver innovative storage solutions with the addition of a new series of PATA 1.8-inch HDDs. The new single-platter (80GB/120GB) and dual-platter (240GB) 4200RPM HDD models deliver the highest capacity along with leading areal density for integration into portable media players, camcorders and ultra-mobile PCs."

See if you can cram one of these in your Zen Vision M. :D

BobbyRS 09-17-2008 10:43 AM

Hmmmm..... It would be interesting to see if the entire 240GB would be recognized or not (if it did work). Plus, one may run into the max file count issue, but still.... nice.

anyone know anything about the 120gb 5mm Toshiba MK1231GAL?
does anyone happen to know anything about it? I know it's a 5mm 120gb HD. I can't find any prices on it, though. is it even released? and more importantly, has anyone managed to get it into a slim 60gb Zen Vision:M? I want one in my slim 60gb...

Looks good, but unfortunately we most likely won't know anything unless someone is bold enough to order one and try. Feeling luck? :D

I have bought one and tried installing, but keep getting 'Hard Disc Error'. I'll try re-formatting the disc first and keep you posted.

BobbyRS 10-20-2008 11:41 AM

Welcome dney. :) Make sure you Format the new drive in Recovery Mode a couple times before trying to load the firmware. Good luck and let us know. Thanks for trying it out!

I've only seen these things for sale on eBay, and the one that's up has an Apple logo on it. That seems to indicate it was pulled from an iPod, and therefore probably won't work on a Zen if the other posts I've seen here are any indication.

Any other 100/120GB 5mm drives out there?

BobbyRS 12-10-2008 04:21 PM

Yeah, I was hoping to hear back from dney by now....

Any word on if you could get this hard drive installed properly? I'm looking to get a Zen Vision W but can't seem to find any newer info there on this drive. If it can work for Zune I'm thinking it will work for the ZVW.

BobbyRS 12-16-2008 07:42 AM

Well, dney hasn't been back since that post....

Jiminey Crickets! Hope he comes back and lets us know something at some point.

BobbyRS 12-17-2008 08:39 AM

Yeah, I think we all are.

Harbinger 09 02-06-2009 02:00 AM

Does anyone here know if the MK2431GAH is a working choice for an upgrade?

BobbyRS 02-06-2009 07:32 AM

Welcome. :) I don't know of anyone who has tried. It is an 8mm drive, so it can be a real tight fit. May take a little more modding than a 5mm.

Harbinger 09 02-06-2009 09:57 AM

Thanks for the prompt reply Bobby. I decided not to be the first to test the waters with the MK2431GAH, and decided to go with the MK1214GAH.

BobbyRS 02-06-2009 11:01 AM

Yeah, probably the smart move. That one is known to work. Still a larger 8mm drive though. Good luck!

To let everyone know it doesn't seem it will work, Someone said they tried it for their zen vision W and it wouldn't recognize it. Also Gadget Doctor said it is not compatible. I was hoping it would work I plan to buy to buy the 30 gig backing so I can slim down my 60 gig since I have to replace the drive anyways (Hard disk problem)

Mod Edit: DELETED Blocked/Banned Site. Please do not try to circumvent the filter.

This hard drive will only work in an iPod. This hard drive will NOT work in a Creative Labs MP3 Player, Zune 30GB, laptop or computer. Compatibility with Zune 80GB/120GB is unknown

BobbyRS 02-25-2009 05:03 PM

Thanks for your feedback as to whether or not the drive works.

Saunic 07-19-2009 05:40 AM

I have installed the MK1231GAL (120 GB/ 5mm/ with Apple logo on it) on my Zen Vision:M 30GB.
See http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum...1&postcount=20.
I bought it for US $139,99 from user jecompgroup on ebay.
The new hard drive starts with a typical noise and was successfully formatted by the player. At the moment, I cannot load the firmware. Firmware upgrade software hangs (already over 1 hour).

I have Windows XP SP3. No windows Media Player installed.

It finally worked using Creative's "MP3 Player Recovery Tool". Here is how (I think, nothing scientific here and I tried many things before):
- De-installing Creative's Player software (apart from the MP3 Player Recovery Tool)
- Re-starting computer
- Started ZVM (it then shows the recovery mode screen. At that time, I already formated HDD and removed the firmware)
- Then I started the MP3 Player Recovery Tool, choosing region and language (rest of world, french)
- After download (actually it was already there through my previous attempts) the firmware upgrade software automatically started
- The update has gone for a while. I have not monitored here 10-30 min? Progress bar was at 100% and message stating that the upgrade failed. On the ZVM screen, the message "firmware upgrade" at the bottom of the screen was still displaying and the ZVM did not respond when using the pad or the "back" key.
- I closed the firmware upgrade software on my PC and let the ZVM on and connected
- Some minutes after (I have not monitored here 5-20 min?), I heard the typical sound windows plays when a USB device is connected and saw that the ZVM was rebooting
- And here it was: a working ZVM with 120 GB and firmware 1.62.02!

So the assumption from The Gadget Doctor is wrong:

This hard drive will NOT work in a Creative Labs MP3 Player

I am trying to install a Samsung HS161JQ 1.8" CEATA 160GB Hard Drive in my ZVM 30GB. I know the drive is thicker and now I am having trouble locating the back for the thick model. Anyone know where I can get one without buying a bricked ZVM?
