Rockbox for Archos 32

I've compiled Rockbox for the Archos 32, 240x400 resolution: http://www.mediafire.com/?8cxzvtjxp8ujp3y

This is very experimental, some things won't work right as of yet. Audio playback however works just fine.

Themes for the Onda VX series have the same screen resolution, they work somewhat, more or less, but not perfectly: http://themes.rockbox.org/index.php?target=ondavx777

When you start Rockbox the first time, the fonts are tiny. You probably need a stylus to tap the correct menu items, and choose a font larger than ~25px.

dfkt could you give me your thoughts on how the Archos 32's SQ compares when running Rockbox to say the Clip+ and Cowon D2+ with Rockbox, many thanks.

There's no audible difference between these players to my ears. Same as all other Android players (Poweramp, Winamp, etc), Rockbox uses the standard Android sound playback system, so it sounds the same. Of course Rockbox has a much better EQ than the others though, and it supports gapless playback.

More about the A32 sound here: http://anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=60963

I didn't take the time to load this onto my 43, but will when I get a chance.

I like where this is going... I just registered here because of this. unfortunately I'm a bit of a noob with rock box so am a bit stuck. I have a 32 but the resolution seemed wrong to me. having trouble getting around, but. in any case I look forward to seeing where this goes... thanks for the Port and nice forums...

Sorry, my bad - I posted the wrong link above, for the 800x480 version. Please download again, I fixed the link to the 240x400 version.

is there still wifi functionality and internet when in rockbox?

lokeyb 02-11-2011 07:00 PM

that's much better thanks. I've had a look at the rockbox wiki and forum but its a bit hard to tell if its me that's not always doing it right or if its the port thats not quite finished. I'm sure i'lll get there eventually though :)

thanks again for doing this - otherwise would never have discovered rockbox!

to answer the wifi question, this runs as an app instead of a full firmware replacement so everything works in the background like with any other app.

I have my own question too.

am i right in assuming the only way to quit rockbox properly is by killing it in a task manager? thanks.

Glad it's useful to you. Enjoy true gapless playback and Replaygain on Android. :)

Yes, it seems for the moment that's the only way. I'm using Advanced Task Killer, it does a nice job at selectively killing tasks.

(I could have sworn sometimes the task ends on its own when Rockbox playback is paused/stopped before exiting to the main screen, but maybe I was imagining things.)

lol, not quite useful yet - I'm still getting to grips with the basic functions! I can definitely see this eventually replacing the default player for me but it's not gonna happen soon. I'm gonna take my time on this, and besides, from what i understand its still an early beta so i'm not gonna pull my hair out over it just yet.

thanks again for sharing the release and your themes etc

cheers

EDIT. I've noticed that if you open rockbox but don't play any mp3's it will eventually quit by itself, but if you do play some music then you have to kill it with a task manager. There's a good chance im wrong though,.

could you re-up your apk please? I reset my device and lost lots of apps including rockbox because i backed up the wrong folder :S

EDIT:

I found this: http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/...droid-registry
so no need flor a re up :)
probably the best place to chec for updates no?

The newest version is still up, in post #6. I'll put the link in the first post too, to avoid confusion.

Added a new version in the first post. This one works with embedded ID3v2 album art and has (timeless) Last.fm scrobbling.

Always download errors
Is it possible to upload to another site, e.g. multiupload.com ?
Thanks for your cooperation!

dfkt 02-21-2011 06:13 AM

Grrr. Mediafire can be really annoying at times. A few people already downloaded that build without issues, but now Mediafire decides to give an error. It's impossible re-uploading the same file again, since they somehow check the MD5 sum of the file and always give the same error, even with a new upload. Also, I can't alter the file even a single byte, since the APK signing wouldn't work anymore, and the app wouldn't install on Android. Here's an alternative for the 240x400 build: (deleted)

thanks for the update dfkt!

I finally went through all the settings/guides and tried using rockbox as my default player. Unfortunately there were two serious problems that have made me go back to archos' player -

Firstly i can't quite "get" the playing now screen. In the default cabbie theme the buttons appear and dissappear and don't seem to always work as expected (plus i thought it looked pretty bad). I prefer the failsafe theme, however none of the buttons are visible at all (I noticed the same now playing view and issues with your theme too dfkt). I do like the simplicity of the failsafe theme, but the invisible buttons made the whole now playing screen a bit annoying. Am i missing something here? i had read something about grid vs regular touch but not sure how that might apply to this situation.

Secondly, I don't have the database activated and was preferring to use the folder view. However when the music finishes on the last file in a folder and i browse to another music file to start playing, it appears to play but no sound comes through. Sometimes there is a split second of sound. Occasionally i can see the the peak bars moving in the nowplaying screen but most of the time they sit flat (despite the play button showing in the status bar and the widget showing that a file is being played). I havent checked if its something to do with the setting related to rockbox's behaviour when it reaches the end of a list yet though. This happens very often and so far the only way i've figured out how to recover sound is to kill all apps with the sytem monitor app or by rebooting.

Apart from that (hope that i don't come across all negative here) but rockbox shows a lot of promise. Apart from the pretty basic issues i was having, the only preference i would have is for the context menus to be android styled (like with the database warning message) rather than embedded within rock box and for the android status bar to be made visible - slightly androidified rockbox? The graphical eq doesn't seem to work either but thats not the end of the world. Also, all of my album artwork is embedded in the id tags and don't show up either but again that's not too serious. I really like the two widgets, the simplistic layout and themes and all the possible options. All in all a very interesting project,

thanks again for sharing DFKT
