Windows Phone on a roll in China

Michel van Bel, the Chief Operating Officer for Microsoft China, has revealed that Windows Phone now holds 7% market share in China. This announcement comes just over a month and a half after Microsoft launched the OS in the region. The iPhone, by comparison, is currently sitting at 6% market share, while the Android behemoth rules over 69% of China’s market.

Bel is enthusiastic about Windows Phone’s rapid rise to 7% market share, and he believes that the OS will continue to chip away at the competition. The upcoming release of Windows 8 will only help Microsoft’s mobile platform. “We’ve only just begun,” he told Emerce, an online business, media, and marketing website.

Nokia and HTC are leading the charge in China, thanks to the Nokia Lumia 800C, the Lumia 610C, and the HTC codename “Eternity.” Do you think Windows Phone will continue its quick rise in China? Will Microsoft eventually manage to repeat this success in other parts of the world?

I think 7% is better than Apple's phone share in china :p.

Competition... I like it.

I would say the iPhone outsells WP in China by something like 20 to 1 currently... WP is just on one small carrier which covers 6% of the market.

Who would believe a Microsoft spokesman? http://communities-dominate.blogs.co...er-bs-sto.html

I bought a Windows Phone because they are practically giving them away here..but my experience of it isn't good. It's a cheap beater.

The DarkSide 06-12-2012 07:52 AM

Funny, all the tech heads I work with want a Lumia 900 after seeing mine. And the only real gripe I have is the omission of an equalizer. Otherwise WP seems to be getting accepted, slowly, but winning over the masses.

Jeven 06-12-2012 08:04 AM

I don't think the masses are buying Windows Phones lol..

Bada outsells it 2 to 1. But if you're happy with cheap tat on contract YMMV. I just got one to confirm how bad it is, but it's a disposable.

The DarkSide 06-12-2012 09:31 AM

And I guess living in the UK makes you the worldwide authority. And bada is the standard by which all smartphones are judged? Considering bada is so unknown and already pretty much DOA before the world had a chance to try & dispose of it,...it's nonexistent here in the USA - and the USA matters to ME.

Bada = low end throwaway device.

Jeven 06-14-2012 10:33 AM

To be fair, the 710 - and I guess the 800 - are low-end and throwaway at least by the standards of ICS on a decent Samsung.

i've discovered faults and limitations that aren't even listed on the 101-reasons-not-to-buy-a-windows-phone list. It really is junk: a gimped up Microsoft feature phone with Nokia maps.

The DarkSide 06-14-2012 02:23 PM

Lol!!! And bada is a has been wasted attempt at an OS that was DOA when it was still being developed. Glad you love it,... ;)

Jeven 06-14-2012 02:26 PM

Samsung's bada seems to outsell WP by quite a margin - if it's DOA what is Windows Phone? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bada

I bet Nokia wishes it could shift as many smartphones. http://omgbada.wordpress.com/2012/02...share-soaring/

I didn't say I had one. I have a MicroLumia 710 for my sins (its not really a Nokia) and a S2. But the fact remains, Windows Phone is the sixth or seventh ecosystem thus far and I don't see it improving.

jupitreas 06-14-2012 03:24 PM

I'm also really enjoying my WP experience with my Lumia 800... I don't see it as a low-end device at all, wonder why anyone would think that.

Anyway, the system itself is really fun to use and aesthetically very pleasing. It makes iOS and Android look ancient and the whole tiled design is really intuitive. The only issue I have with the Lumia 800 is its sub-par audio quality but I guess most phones have poor sound quality anyway as it is not a design goal for them.

El C 06-17-2012 08:58 AM

A question to Windows Phone users, what do you like about it that iOS/Android/BB doesn't provide?

The DarkSide 06-17-2012 09:23 AM

Simplicity of use, speed, smoothness, aesthetically appealing, overall good user experience. That's what I can think of ATM.

But, as mentioned above, the audio playback leaves much to be desired. But, an iPhone or SOME Andriod phones do music much better. MS is slacking in an area they should kick azz in. Even HTC put an eq in their WP7 phone. Nokia is dropping the ball on this,...

Jeven 06-17-2012 09:49 AM

I do like the smoothness of the interface, and it seems to be very good at messaging - whether that's email, sms or those social networks.

But I'm keeping my Android - it's better in a lot of ways imo.
