BTW, I used 'Cruft' incorrectly. It's a term for obsolete old hardware bits and pieces or (in wikipedia) spurious lists. I meant it in the...

Thanks for the suggestions.

I was also asking because I'd really like to know how unusual my requirements are. The question was prompted after a friend of mine told me she's been perfectly happy...

The way I use an MP3 player means that 8-16GB is adequate for my needs.

As I don't need the removable storage it has several disadvantages:

How many people want very basic MP3 players?

It's very frustrating trying to find an MP3 player because even though my requirements are extremely basic no one seems to 'hit the spot'.

What I want:

Minimal display
Real volume...

I just want the original clip back.

Better battery life and 16GB would be nice - even if it did get fractionally bigger in each dimension.

I got my clip and transfered a very long playlist to it (~2000 tracks). When I try and select the playlist it hands for a couple of minutes and then turns itself off.

So I cut down the size of the...

Clip sound quality

I have had a Clip for a couple of weeks now. I'd heard the SQ was good so I expected it to be the same of very slightly worse than my Cowon or Samsung Z5.

However, I've noticed that on a fair few...

How long is a dot?

For some bizarre reason everyone in the 'slow startup' thread talks about 'dots' instead of seconds.

How long is a dot?

Or, to put it another way and cut to the chase: How long does it take one...

What a tragedy - no UMS support.

I'd been through the whole process.

Carefully researching all the must have features to ensure that the Zen had them.

And it seemed as if at last I'd found the ideal player.

But then what...
