Unless you buy the sony cradle/charger you have to use the headphone jack. The cradle has power and audio out.

I have not tried the audio out feature as well. Just hooked it up to my PC for syncing and charging. I do not need to use the adapters for either one of my players. They fit in the cradle just fine....
