The only real reason to go with an external amp is higher output voltage. If you don't need that then you don't want an amp.

As for making them smaller, that is missing the point. Amps are...

Frequency scaling has been enabled for a few years already on the Fuze+.

Edit: I'm sure it's possible to save more power on almost any target, but I don't know enough about the Fuze+ to suggest...

I like pandora a lot more then Google play for streaming music. At low bitrate setting its 48-64 kbps aac-he which is also about as low bandwidth as you want to go.

Keep in mind though that if you...

I guess you have an e200v2 if you're running out of RAM? The v1 has tons of RAM so it shouldn't have that problem.

You could try disabling or shrinking things in your player's configuration...

My own MP3 optimizations on the Sandisk devices.

Its pretty obvious when you think about it. VBR vs. CBR is a user thing, not a technical thing. A decoder doesn't even know the difference. From...

There is no difference for the same bitrate (a 256 CBR and 256 average VBR file take exactly the same time to decode).

VBR is a little more power efficient in practice though that 256 CBR, since...

I've never seen a device that would play CBR MP3 but not VBR, but I have a desk full of them that fail to play perfectly valid AAC files. I don't even think this is comparable.

AAC outside of Apple/Android is a crapshoot of compatibility problems though. Pretty much any mp3 encoder will produce a file thats decodable by any device. That isn't true of AAC, at least not yet.

Volume probably.

No point in A/B of electronic devices without real volume matching. Its a waste of time unless one is really, really bad.

That amp has a permanent 1 db bass boost applied, so it will sound very slightly more bass heavy. That's just gimmicky crap though. Quality devices like the fiio let you turn off eq.

Headfi has some knowledgable people, but very few of them post about audio players. The quality of the information there is very low, so you tend to get a lot of crap.

People hear increased volume as more bass, less volume as more tinny. So if you describe a louder device as having more bass, I'd point out that this is because its louder :)

Match the volumes...

The clip puts out about a half volt which is a few dB below line in level. You could use a preamp with about 2x gain, but I'm not sure its necessary.
