I don't find the firmware in any of the Fiio players difficult to use. Sure, it takes some getting used to, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist.

I don't think they're dead. I think it's two reasons - stores are probably cutting stock on things they don't sell a lot of in store, and a lot of people just use their phone for playing music...

Couldn't one achieve similar sound quality...
