Also it seems that as soon as it sees a real charger, it resets the small battery indicator. A full charge and sleep mode turned off, and everything looks normal again.

Mine just started doing the same thing... I charged it a few days ago and the screen said 'charge full'. Today after maybe a few hours use it just says 'LOW BATTERY' in red and dies.

If it helps I mostly connect my X7 to a Windows 7 64bit PC . As everyone said, it's just a storage device at the end of the day. I use a mixture of Mediamonkey and drag & drop.

If you have the filenames 1-1, 1-2, 1-3 etc it will play them in the right order if you navigate by folder, but I wish the tag worked properly too - I sent Cowon another Q&A report....
