How many songs you can fit depends on how long the songs are and the bitrate at which they're encoded. Companies put estimates, Creative based theirs it on 4 minutes songs are 64kbps (or 128kbps, depending on the capacity of your player).

It's also based on filetype. Windows Media Audio / wma manages to really pack a lotta music into a small amount of space, especially at smaller bitrates (not so much at larger ones). I'm pretty sure '500 songs' is an estimate based on 64 kbps wma files. It's sorta misleading, because most people prefer higher quality (and subsequently larger) audio files than that and can never really achieve that 500-song thing.

Those estimates of song capacity are grossly exaggerated, imo. Who rips at 64 kpbs? Soem may disagree, but even if you're using WMA, I wouldn't go below 128 kbps.

I rip using LAME VBR ( ~170 kbps per song) and don't get anywhere close to the advertised capacity. (But my music sounds great!!)

I know its soo misleading. 64kbps? come on nobody rips at such a low quality. they might as well brag about how many 32kbps they can fit.

Cool smartfit

if you want to get more songs onto your player, try using SmartFit it automatically converts your files to 64 kbps so it saves up space on your player..i use it and i dont notice any change in quaility when listening to music on my zen v plus. and it doesnt save the converted files on your hard drive which is great..to enable it:

1) Open Up The Zen V Explorer

2) Click On Browse Media

3) Click Settings (should be on the top right, (the wrench))

4) Click Enable SmartFit, decide whether you want to convert all files, or only those that need it to be able to fit

5) Drag and Drop files ONLY in that folder

hope this helps

Agreed, 64 is a distinct difference even on the visionM! It sure would be nice for everyone to give a more accurate depiction of how many songs will fit, however we also hold the responsibility to know the finer points and research before we dump this kind of $$ out. (I trust we all did do our research resulting in our excellent decision for Creative!)

Never go by how many songs they say you can put on. Go by the MEMORY capacity. If the total size of the songs you are trying to put on the Zen is higher than the amount of GB than your Zen has then you won't be able to fit them all on. e.g. If the total size of the songs is 1005mb and you have a 1000mb (1GB) Zen then you won't be able to fit them all on.
