Page The Official Insignia Pilot Feature Request List

Welcome to the Insignia Pilot Feature Request/Bug Report Thread

This thread was created by the community, as a central area where the Insignia MP3 Team can easily find what features we would like to see in the Pilot series, as well as future players from Insignia.

So here's how it works: you suggest a feature, and I'll put it in the "New Requests" category (Note: By suggesting a feature, you automatically vote "yes" for it). Once there, it may be voted on by other members. If it receives at least 1 more "yes" vote, it'll be moved to the "Low Priority" category. If it receives 3 more "yes" votes, it'll move to the "High Priority" category. If a feature receives 5 "no" votes, it may be placed in the "Recycle Bin", but only if the "no" votes outnumber the "yes" votes.

You may also submit bug reports. If a bug receives 2 "yes" votes, it'll be moved to high priority. Please be sure to include the version of firmware you are presently running when submitting a bug.

Please read before voting:
  • New feature suggestions should be encapsulated in asterisks. e.g. "**Feature I would like...**". Simply because it will make it easier for me to find.
  • When voting, please use this syntax: "Feature or bug name - Yes or No", and include the ID number if you can. The ID number makes it easier for me to find the feature you want to vote for.
  • Bug reports should be prefixed with: "BUG:" like so; "BUG: My player locks up when I..." .
  • If you know the ID number of the feature you're looking for, you can quickly find it by pressing Ctrl + F, and putting a dash (-), plus the feature ID (no spaces) in the box. e.g. "-63".

18 Display artist name next to song title in the “Now Playing” quick view list [4 votes]

19 Audio Crossfading [3 votes]

20 Gapless Offset [2 votes]
(Description: Because the silence between tracks vary greatly depending on how they were encoded, it is difficult to create a one-size-fits-all gapless setting. This feature would allow the user to adjust the duration of silence between tracks to something that best suites their music collection. This option would tell the player, in milliseconds how prematurely to skip tracks.
Options could be: -500ms -250ms -100ms Off (e.g., "-500ms" would tell the player to skip tracks 500ms before the current track has ended, reducing or eliminating any silence))

Default ** Remember playlist after sync/charge **

It would be great if the Pilot could remember the dynamic playlist and currently playing song after USB sync. I understand the files could change, but it relentlessly profiles the media any time something halfway major happens (including sync) and should be able to tell if nothing changed.

Default BUG: Locks up on some images

Haven't established a pattern, but while in MSC mode I uploaded folders with cover.jpg album art. These may have unexpected DPI or very large sizes, but the Pilot should not lock up. I have to hold the power switch over for 10 or 15 seconds so the player shuts off.

Edit: Should have noted this before... NS-4V24, firmware v1.006

Default ** Album art with MSC **

Only way I've found to include album art is via MTP. It would be great if cover.jpg or folder.jpg or [album name].jpg could be used as cover art. Added bonus would be if these were ignored in the Pictures list, but if not, that's fine too.

Default BUG: Back goes forward

I consider this a bug.

CB: When you are in random mode on the now playing screen playing a song, pressing left or back will go the beginning of the song (this is correct). Press it again and you move FORWARD in the playlist.

PB: Retain going to beginning of current song, but subsequent press should play previous song.

Especially since the random playlist appears to be pre-built rather than dynamically choosing the next random song, this seems like a no brainer.

Edit: Should have noted this before... NS-4V24, firmware v1.006

Default ** Play/Add context menu in Folder Browser **

CB:
When using the media library, pressing the play button on an Artist, Album, Genre, etc., you get a context menu to Play, Add to playlist, Play All, etc. When you are in the Folder Browser, play simply expands the folder (which can also, more intuitively, be done using right/next). This makes it only possible to play/add one file, or all files in the immediate folder.

PB:
Pressing play on a folder should bring up a context menu like in media library. This would make it possible to organize your music in a deeply nested folder structure and play/add more than just one folder at a time. For instance, if you have "artist/album/nn - song.mp3", it is not currently possible to add all albums from one artist at once using folder browser.

I agree with these 3 things. I absolutely hate that you cannot go back in random mode

My only problem with the player is how it implements bookmarks & folder browsing. I listen to audio books which are often broken up into multiple files in a folder (similar to how music albums are stored). If you bookmark a file while listening to it and then reload it the player will only play the single file bookmarked and when it finish it will not go to the next file. The same is true if you navigate to a file with the file browser. It only plays the single file selected. Bookmarking as it is currently implemented, is not useful unless your audio books consist of a single file. The file browser is not useful unless you only want to play a single file. All the players needs to do is if it gets to the end of the file and it is not in shuffle/repeat mode then play the next file in the folder. Either that or the bookmarking needs to remember not just the file but also the playlist.

I also second the suggestion that the player remembers the currently playing file and playlist when doing USB Syncing.

Default ** Better Unicode support via MSC **

I have several albums from German, Swedish, Norwegian, Estonian, etc. artists and when I tried to copy these over via MSC, the tag information didn't display correctly. I use Windows XP and Foobar2000 0.9.4.4 (or whatever 0.9.x is the latest at any given time) for all of my music. Typically, I enter the tags in fb2k using the Alt+0xxx key combos for special characters (ä being Alt-0228, for example). Foobar2000 is set to use id3v1 and id3v2.4 for tags. After the tags are correct, I use fb2k's file renaming function to name the files as they are tagged, so the file names also contain special characters.

When copied to the Pilot, most of the special chars were replaced with a space and some other character while browsing the library. While in Folder Browser, though, the file names appeared correct. There is a little more about what I tried on this thread.

As near as I can tell, WinXP uses UTF-16 for Unicode filenames. ID3v2.4 specifies UTF-8 as the standard encoding for tags, though ID3v1, I believe, uses locale-specific encoding (so probably ASCII or ISO-8859-1... standard US English WinXP). Also, it would seem that ASCII, ISO-8859-1 and UTF-8 all share the same encoding for the basic accented characters.

I have a reasonable understanding with regards to text encoding, but am by no means an expert. I'd be happy to send sample files, try various suggestions or otherwise work with the developers to isolate the problem or what I am doing wrong. Basically, I'd like accented Latin characters, Cyrillic characters, or anything else in Unicode to work for files transfered via MSC.

FWIW, my wife's Cowon iAudio G3 does seem to understand the encoding of my tags as is.

Yesterday a person asked me about Unicode support, etc. So I tried it out.

I took two mp3 songs. Named on in Russian and updated the tags, ID3V2, to have Russian. Then I took the second song, and found some Chinese on Wikipedia, and inputted the Chinese text into the filename and into the ID3V2 tags.

In folder browsing the text was displayed properly for both songs, when playing the song the text was displayed properly for both songs. When browsing the music by ID3 tags, the text was displayed fine in all of the categories (artist, title, genre, etc.)

So I'm not sure why you are having that issue

I'm not sure either. I took a song that I did not already have in my library on the Pilot and grabbed just the first 30 seconds. I then used foobar2000 to make sure the tags are as I usually have them (both id3v1 and id3v2.4). WinXP properties shows the tags properly. Switched to Files & Folders mode, dropped the file on my SD card (2gb microsd in adapter) and I have the same problem as before. I attached the file, try it out if you like.

shows as (the Ặ is mostly a guess, but the other two unintended characters are exactly as shown - CJK ideogram and pound sign)

Folder Browser on the Pilot gets it right.

Update: If I use Mp3tag to write ONLY id3v2.3 with UTF-16, it does work via MSC. So, I guess I want UTF-8 and id3v2.4 support.

Default ** Album art with MSC ** BIG YES VOTE

Album art MUST be recognized. I use ogg, and my software is unable to embed the covers in that format. Synching with ogg is difficult at best. I prefer simply copying my albu folders over, and those ALWAYS include a folder.jpg, or cover.jpg.

Simple album cover detection of common cover titles is a must, espescially for files where covers are not embedded or cannot be embedded.

Not to mention us who would prefer 1 simple image per folder insteaad of embedding the same image over and over.

It would be GREAT for that image to not be restricted to a exact size and dimensions, but rather loose, for example up to 800x800 and up to 100kb.

Another option if there is no embedded or specifically recognized cover name, to use any image in the folder if there is one.

Cover recognition priority.
1. Embedded
2. Recognized Cover Name.jpg
3. Last resort, any image that happens to be in the folder

Thanks!

I agree with bookmarks remembering the playlist and the current track position. This is especially important for multi-track audiobooks and live albums. Both Cowon and Rio implemented bookmarks in this way. This type of bookmark lets the listener switch back and forth easily between different audiobooks.

It could be implemented as a user option: one track or whole playlist.

I agree, and vote for this one. I personally hate having images in the MP3 it self, usually I've seen it work as if you have a JPG file that has the same name as the folder, then it would use that picture. I vote for that

Default Features that I would Like - Combined otherwise I would have 2000 posts

SD Card
  • Ability to copy files from SD card to main memory and vise versa – Digital camera people will love you for this. Imagine that you are out taking pictures and you are out of memory on your SD card, never fear Pilot is here! Plug the card in, copy the files to internal memory, delete from SD card and go back to taking pictures!

Context Menus
  • Pressing the Rating button would bring up a context menu, like pressing the play/pause button. This would allow to click on the folder and delete the folder or play the whole folder from the File Browsing menu. From there include the ability to do these tasks, while keeping all of the current ones:
    • Play Now Keeping Other Songs – A lot of times I will navigate and find a song that I want to hear, but if I play it it will remove all my other songs in the now playing. If I add to now playing, then I have to navigate and find it. I just want to play that song now, then afterwards continue with the songs that were already in now playing.
    • Search – Lets you search for a specific words on that page, or in sub folders. Searching for songs/artists/albums/genres in the Music Library
    • Volume Control – Comes in useful
    • Changing the Play Mode – Repeat/Shuffle etc.
Pictures
  • Ability to change views for photos. It would be nice to have bunch of pictures in little thumbs so that it is easier to navigate through them.
  • When you place pictures in the player, you have the ability to put them in sub folders, etc. When viewing pictures through the pictures menu, it ignores those folders and just combines all of the pictures together. I would like for it to keep the folder structure, otherwise it can get very messy.

Text
  • Support for bigger amount of file types
  • When viewing a TXT file, there is no way to go back to the screen that you were at before. You have to press the menu button and go back into the Folder browsing and find that file again. This can get very annoying pretty quickly.
  • Ability to highlight parts of text would be nice, but not necessary
Headphone Jack
  • When Headphones get unplugged, pause the music
  • When you plug in headphones automatically turn on the player

Video
  • Bigger file type support
  • Ability to watch videos at VGA resolutions – This one probably won't happened due to hardware limitations

Usability
  • When the player is idle and you have the screen set to turn off. If you want to skip a song you have to press a button to wake it up, then you can skip a song. Please include the ability to just skip a song without having to press a button to wake up the screen.
  • Ability to change wallpapers to custom pictures.
  • Ratings: Create groups for songs that have different amount of stars. So say you have bunch of music that has a rating of 1 star, and 5 stars. Create separate groups for those files and be able to play on files with say 5 stars, or say 1 star, etc.
  • The ability to remap the Rating keys to anything else. So that I could remap the rating key to skin songs etc.
  • The ability to search for items would be nice

Sound
  • More presets
  • Bass Boost option :-)
  • Saving FM radio or Line in as MP3 files, not just WMV

Firmware version: shipping firmware when Pilot first launched (I'm not sure of the number, sorry)

BUG: With audio bookmarks on SD-card-based tracks of any type, the wrong song title -- one from main memory -- is shown in the Load Bookmarks list. Thankfully, if you play the bookmark, it goes straight to the right point in the right SD-card-based track.

**Playlist editing**:

PB: Playlist editing, particularly for "Now Playing" (have one of the buttons, preferably menu, bring up a pop-up menu with track delete and move commands)

**Default Music Library category setting**:

CB: Music Library always starts at Play All.
PB: Have a setting to customize which category occurs first when you go to Music Library from the main menu the first time; subsequently, have player remember where you were in Music Library after a selection is made, then return you to that same place.

My votes for features upthread:
Remember playlist after sync/charge - YES
Play/Add context menu in Folder Browser - YES
Bookmarks that remember a point in a playlist - YES
Back goes forward (in Random mode) - YES

Thanks!
***No (preferred EMBEDDED) album art support in MSC mode*** is a MAJOR issue with me. It lessons the visual enjoyment of an otherwise well thought-out, feature-packed product! I prefer using MSC mode because of its inherent simplicity in quickly loading media.

** Bookmarking with RETENTION of the WHOLE PLAYLIST** would GREATLY enhance the practicle useability of this feature. Having the bookmark restore playback qued to the proper position WITHIN the associated ALBUM or AUDIO BOOK seems only natural and intuitive to me.
