Just got hold of a X5 60gb.Wondering if anyone had similar issues.( NB I KNOW THERE IS A SIMILAR THREAD AROUND BUT MY PROBLEM WITH USB IS SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT, and APOLOGIES if anything is repitition of available knowledge):-
1) Recognised as an external hard drive fine by my pc when I use the cradle but not when directly in the USB host port on the player ( yes I make sure USB host is switched on). At best I get a "USB mass storage device not recognised" on my PC. Highly inconvenient as i have to take the cradle with me if I travel and use other computers. Is this normal? 2)Battery life is down to approx 4 hrs play. Anybody got ideas as to where and which batteries to buy( I'm in the UK) . And is replacement easy for a non-skilled person in electronics? 3) Thinking about replacing the hard drive too with a 80gb/100gb one - is this feasible for me .And which brand should i use? (also is this a job for an expert?) I apreciate your time in reading this. Thanks |

1) Yes, this is normal. USB Host is not meant to be connected to a computer. This side-port is just meant for connecting to digital cameras, flash memory sticks, etc - to transfer data to the X5's HDD.
2) Hope you still got warranty, that would make it all easier. In any case, contact Cowon Europe (in Germany), they're the closest to you. 3) You'd need to find a 2.5" HDD with ATA socket, not the newer ZIF ones. 80/100GB disks would only work properly with Rockbox installed on the X5, since the original firmware has a 10000-file/folder limit. Since you got the 60GB X5 version, you can use a double-platter HDD.

Thanks very much for your answers!
Regarding the battery- I'll contact Cowon Germany, but I would prefer to buy a battery ( plenty on ebay) and get a local electronics firm here to fit it. Are the batteries for the 30gb or X5L compatible? |

The X5L batteries are thicker, they don't fit your X5 60GB. You need a normal X5 battery (if X5 20, 30, or 60Gb doesn't matter).
