I'm definitely siding on defective sync adapter, defective USB cable, or possible bad hard drive.

Your usb hardware is fried most likely. Happened to me. No one seems to understand that once the computer won't recognize it and reinstalling the drivers doesn't fix it it is game over. Happened to me on 5 ZVM 60 GB. Don't wipe the drive if you at least still want to listen to what's on it. It will be a paperweight afterwards.
I sync mine all the time for podacasts so it must be the frequency of syncing that keeps nuking the frail usb hardware. It's a shame they don't address the issue. |

Thanks for the help guys but I gave up. The thing isn't worth it to me anymore. More trouble than it is worth.
