I'm trying to update firmware, but it keeps saying something's interfering

I received an email from Creative "technician" saying that I may need to upgrade my firmware (my screen is dim, almost black) but when I try to upgrade it, a pop-up comes up saying that Windows Media Player or some other application is interfering - I closed everything and now have nothing running, but I'm still getting the same message. Got any hints?
