Default Best Buy quitting 8GB Pilot?

As much as they have been on sale lately, and now that they show "sold out online," do you suppose there is a replacement coming, is Best Buy abandoning, or are they just selling like crazy?

Default hard to say..

Life cycle's of electronics are often measured in months. The Pilot's a little long in the tooth as far as these things go. Regardless, it's a supremely good player and I hope it's sales are increasing. This would give it a good chance of being replaced by something as good or better. I only hope they don't try to reinvent the wheel. The only changes I would make are in the refinement catagory, not anything fundamental. For example, a dedicated boomark button, not a slightly finicky three way design. Battery life while on par with other players, could be increased to the 30+ hour level. Configurable bookmarking would be nice. For example, I'd like an option to over-write bookmarks when bookmarking the same file. A smoother jog wheel design would be good. Other than that, I hope they leave it alone. I've owned an 8GB Pilot for over a year now. It's been extremely reliable, easy to use and intuitive. As far as I'm concerned, it's almost perfect. Better than anything else out there right out of the box. This would include iPods, Cowon players, iRiver players and anything else I can think of. It's the only player I've owned that didn't have what I consider a fatal flaw. I own two iPods, an iPhone, a Cowon iAudio7 and have owned many other players. I've said it before but I truly consider the Pilot designers the successors to the late, great Rio crew.

Yes its not unexpected for this player to be superseded by now. After all Apple bring out a new generation of ipod every year.

I can still remember my first mp3 player that my wife got me one Christmas, a few years back. It was an Intel 3000 player with a whopping 64MB of internal memory, a very simple LCD display that just showed track number, no song titles or anything and cost $150. It only took MMC and not SD. Look how far we have come and what you get for that now!

Not disagreeing with either of you. I mention because [a] I haven't yet heard of a new Insignia player to replace it, [b] I wonder about firmware updates for the 8GB Pilot, [c] I would hate for the line to disappear.

Well I guess we'll soon find our within the next few months. It won't be long before we are coming into the christmas period, so I am sure we'll soon see if they have plans on replacing this model. I also hope they release at least one new firmware as well. I hope they are just taking their time and don't end up releasing a half assed firmware just so no one can say they didn't release any!

And now it's gone from their site completely. The 4GB is still there, but the 8GB is not searchable and the previously saved link I had throws an error.

Interesting. :-)

Yeah I have to say that doesn't look good. After all why drop the 8GB and leave the 4GB? It almost looks like they getting rid of stock and the 8GB just sold out faster due to the sale they had, although you would think they'd drop the 4GB down as well but maybe they feel no need as it was selling well enough already. If the 4GB disappears then I guess it probably means it's curtains for the Pilot.
