Just got my Zen yesterday Afternoon (Yah Amazon Prime) and my present is some nice firmware. Very nice update.

Good to see this addressed. I've heard much complaining about this.

Some more changes I noticed:

*Crystalizer has been changed again. It is more realistic and like a flat sound with the higher kbps songs. [that made me really happy because the typical mid-bass hump of the Creative players disappears with crystalizer and that option is really beneficial for me now]. But one may be complainant about its less effect for 128kbps songs. Briefly, crystalizer is more natural, flatter and realistic, and is not as harsh as the old crystalizer.
note: This is not a placebo. I tested it with another Zen X-Fi which has 1.03... I'm sure...

*Menu is faster, less glitchy.

*Nothing changed about the resolution limit. Maybe, they added some more codecs for DivX. Dont know actually.

Great, I think it's pretty slow ATM, will try the new one now

The reception is fine for me, I use Philips SHN7500, I think it depends on what earphones you use..

I've had my player freeze 4 times in a row since I updated the firmware. It's hooked up via USB to WMP11. I'm trying to delete an album then it just goes blank.

Yes, that will make the biggest difference. However, using the same earphones or the stock ones, any improvememts?

Perhaps reloading the firmware again in case there were issues with the first install may help.... Some Creative players/firmware releases have been known in the past to take two firmware installs in order to work correctly.

I haven't take the stock earphones out of the box yet, lol Anyways, I can try with my other creative which look like the stock ones, and see if its the same...

My normal headphones is the philips one. I got them 1 week before my zen, but I can try the reception with my other headphones, a couple of creative ones, think it is the same model as the stock ones. But I will do this tomorrow, gonna sleep now

I've had no crashes or anything with the new firmware yet (though I haven't tried transferring files or anything yet).
Radio reception with the new firmware...I dunno. I barely ever used the radio before anyway, but it's possible the reception has improved. My house is usually pretty terrible for all things reception-related but stations seemed pretty good, with two of the three signal bars and pretty much no static.

The one thing I have noticed, which for me makes the new firmware totally worthwhile: The bug of the player having low volume and muddy sound when you turn it on until you muck with x-fi settings hasn't reoccurred since
I upgraded.
No idea about the crystalliser though - my ears aren't good enough to tell the difference, to be honest.

EDIT: Totally minor, but I discovered another little benefit. When you browse by album and have it set on album art mode (with the six album covers per screen), fastscrolling screen by screen used to not update the album title text at the top. That's fixed now.

I'm trying to watch video's to see if I notice that the audio and video is synced up.

In my opinion that was the most annoying thing, but it seems to be gone.

I notice the volume is fixed and the sound quality is less flat


Im using a Ultimate Ears super fi 5eb and at volume 3 which is pretty low the sound is pretty loud

Default Firmware 1.04.08 upgrade failed
Sorry for my bad english but i'm a french guy...

I downloaded the last firmware but I always have the same error "firmware upgrade failed"

EDIT : i found the solution :

1 - disconnect player, then reboot into recovery mode (shutdown button + play/pause button together)
2 - clean up
3 - format all
4 - erase firmware
5 - reboot and plug into USB port
6 - do the firmware update

and it works, finally !!!

How does this recovery mode works? Can you access files on it and such? Or will it just remove everything from your zen and remove firmware?
