I can't find much information about this player, except that it supposed to have 45 hour battery life, FM radio, and sell for under $100 for 4 gigs. There is the E438 8 gig model at under $140. It seems crazy for a $40 price difference for 4 extra gigs of flash memory when flash memory is so cheap. Does this player really get 45 hours battery life? Does it navigate by folders as well as tags? Is the sound quality good? Will it play files below 32 kbps, or is it like other Sony models which refuse to play files under 32 kbps?
I found this. "Battery life is rated 1150 songs/76h 40m (48kbps), 885 songs/59h (64kbps), 440 songs/29h 20m (128kbps), 220 songs/14h 40m (256kbps), 175 songs/11h 40m (320kbps) for music" I know battery life on mp3 players tends to vary a bit with the bitrate used, however it is hard to believe that battery life could be over 76 hours at 48 kbps, and under 12 hours at 320 kbps. This seems crazy. http://www.sonyinsider.com/2008/08/1...aland-website/ Last edited by JK98; 09-21-2008 at 12:53 PM. |

I don't know about the E436, but the A81x series supports navigation via folder and IDtags. It is best to assume that the new players would also support folder navigation/playback. My A818 can also last around 30 hours playing 160kbps WMA files, and based on my experience Sony's Walkman battery quote are pretty reliable.
BTW, I saw this player yesterday at my local Sony shop (UK). It's small design gives it a rather 'stumpy' look! There were no pricing available, or indeed any information! |

This player looks exactly like the NWZ-s610 series, except with a new form factor and possibly a better battery. Other than that, nothing is different from what I can tell.
If you liked the S610, you'll probably like the E430. |

The EQ seems more limited-there's no Clear Stereo or Clear bass.

Can anyone tell me is the sound on S730 much better than on the E430??
Is it worth giving extra for the clear audio tech? Not interested in NC, just the clear audio and stuff.... Has anyone seen the S630 in a shop anywhere? So the one like 730 but without NC? |

Quote:
the hour rating should be based on nothing less than 128kbps. i wonder how much competitor mp3 players drop in play time when playing bigger files.

Still no ABI review of the E438? I am wondering about the huge variation in battery life I saw with different bitrates used. It doesn't make sense that there should be such a great variation.

Is it MTP only like the B130 or MTP/UMS?

I would stay away from the E436, 2 units so far both had dust and dead pixels in the LCD (over 8 on one unit and 6 on the other)... Sound quality is very good, though to increase battery life the volume is significantly decreased from the A810 and S610 series. No clear bass or other technologies for sound enhancement are available either, if you care about that.
