Your receipt may not be necessary. i did not provide it to them. i did register my player when i first bought it via the web site. when i called in for service, i provided my info and i think they had my info, which i think i figured at the time was due to registering my player. but i also think can tell how old you player is by the serial number - i gave them that as well. try that and see what happens.
i hope they fix it, when it played it sounded great. i have see other Samsung 4 gig players for less than $70 US.
