Yeah, I would make sure you are getting a good power supply that is either new or tested working.

Default Vsion:m Not Seen by PC

I have this problem too, where a computer does not see my ZVM and the player does not attempt to dock. I think the problem was caused when plugging it into my parents Toyota Sienna (DC, not an external inverter). When I plugged it in, if I remember right, it would turn off, I then unplugged it and it proceeded to rebuild the media lists. I did this about 3 times with the same results each time (also very stupidly i turned it off while rebuilding once). I gave up charging it then. I have previously charged it in my Ford Escort with no problems. I later charged in the wall, AC, successfully with the same AC/DC cable combo seen here, which looks very different now for some reason. Mine is black and both AC and DC adapter are shaped differently. This was on vacation, never plugging into a computer while gone. When I got home and decided to add some music to the player I plugged it into my computer and the player turned on and thats it. I tried different USB cables but with the same dongle and also tried on my laptop which showed no difference.
I have a couple of questions.
1) Is there a tutorial somewhere showing how to change a motherboard
2) Where is a good place to get a new motherboard? (my guess is a player with bad screen/HDD)
3) Or even better is there a fix for this problem?

Things I have done:
1. Booted player into Recovery and did the file cleaning thing.
2. Tried different cables/computers, but not dongle
3. reinstalled software on PC, note there has been absolutely no change to my computer, software or hardware prior to this step.
4. Tried different USB ports on my computer.
5. Obviously rebooted both my PC and player.

Hello coldhandshake. Welcome.

Does the ZVM seem to function fine besides not charging or not connectig? When you connect it to the computer, does the screen changed to show it's docked? If it doesn't (and it works correctly otherwise), I think I would question the condition of the sync adapter (dongle) before the mainboard.

You can try these:
Here is the ABI disassembly guide.
Here is a video of a disassembly.
Here is another video of the disassembly.

Search for some as-is (cracked screens or faild hard drive) ZVM's or also try doing a google search on Zen repair or parts.

I would consider purchasing a new sync adapter (dongle) or one of those sync cables (eliminates the dongle) to test before spending money on a mainboard.

Hi, thanks for the super fast response, yes it does work fine other than not docking. It plays music and such, I will try my friends dongle at work today hopefully and see it that works on my laptop.
Also you know how a usb drive can get shocked or confused when unplugged from the computer if not ejected? could that have happened even though it was only plugged into a charger?

The ZVM is not necessarily a USB drive and is not susceptible to making sure it is ejected since it isn't connected as a removable device (unless you put it in removable device mode for the data partition). An MTP device can usually be removed anytime as long as it is not in a state of communication (showing activity like the docking arrows moving on the screen). If it was plugged into a charger, it shouldn't matter since the charger shouldn't even be charging through the USB port, but the AC port. Test with the other dongle and let’s see how it goes from there. <O</O

I checked my player connecting to a PC at work with my friends dongle and got no response from player or PC, so I'm sure its the player now. I think everything else is eliminated. So I guess my next step is to save up for a motherboard, maybe I'll find one from a 60g and have USB host functionality. Also I want to put a much higher capacity HDD in it.

It sounds like you are ready for the upgrade. Good luck! The threads below may help:

Here is the hard drive replacement thread.
Here is the new tested hard drive swap thread.
Here is the hard drive connector type thread.<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

Keep in mind, when switching mainboards, the firmware used should be for the version for the type of mainboard used regardless of hard drive used.

30GB mainboard = ZVM:30 firmware
60GB mainboard = ZVM:60 firmware

Default issue with windows vista and zen vision:m

I too am having the same problem as most of the people in this thread which is the reason I didn't start a new one.
About 6 weeks ago I tried to plug in my zen vision m to my new laptop (running Windows Vista SP1). Upon discovering an issue with drivers etc (even though it is supposed to have native driver support) i decided to upgrade the firmware (i guess it was time).
This seemed to fix my problem. After reading through various problems that various other people were having as well i discovered that the driver also didn't actually exist on windows vista. I rectified this problem. All was good.
About 2 weeks ago i ended up somehow giving myself a virus and used system restore to go back to a clean install of windows vista (i know new computer + virus = not cool).
I have not since tried to use my zen vision in my computer as I have been charging it while i use it at work (or when it died at work) and I have therefore not had a need to use in my computer until the other day when I went to add some videos to it since I was going on holiday and discovered I couldn't.
Unfortunately I was already at the airport and don't have my installation disk. I know everyone says you don't need it for Windows Vista but then why doesn't it work.
Last night i was successful in having it attached to the windows vista computer but it would not dock or charge. I plugged it in and it would turn on as if to play but that was it. Nothing else. i tried it also on 2 other computers (with windows xp service pack 2 and wmp 10). To be honest i never used it with WMP so that is not the issue. The issue is having it identified by the computer which leads me to believe it is the dongle/sync adapter.
I am currently emailing with Creative and they have told me to go to the device manager. Well that is not going to help because it is not recognised at all therefore it doesn't show up.
Until i can somehow get it functioning connected to the computer again i can't use it because my wall charger no longer works (and hasn't for some time leading me to think it was the connection on the dongle for the wall charger because my psp charger doesn't work either).
Anyway so i was wondering if anyone knew of where i could find myself a new dongle to try. I live in australia and i don't think we even have a creative store. I know there are resellers as i bought my unit from JB hi-fi in brisbane but they only seem to stock ipods now. Does anyone know of anywhere. I tried www.minidisc.com.au but they say they are out of stock, as do amazon as do some other place i came across. I found one on ebay but the postage was 3x as much as the dongle.
Any ideas - greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Sian

I don't know what the monetary exchange is but this Ebay seller is in Hong Kong & ships worldwide. I have bought the dongles from them & they are fast when shipping.http://cgi.ebay.com/Sync-Adapter-For-CREATIVE-ZEN-Vision-M-30GB-60GB-New_W0QQitemZ160324704002QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CE_ MP3Access_RL?hash=item160324704002&_trksid=p3911.c 0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205|66%3A4|65%3A12|39%3A1|24 0%3A1318|301%3A0|293%3A1|294%3A200

Try reading a thread I just posted, I had the same exact problem and fixed it today (after 3 years).

Let me know if that helps?
