Default Kenwood USB car stereo only charges NWZ-S639?

I have a sony NWZ-S639 mp3 player and a kenwood car stereo with USB input. Every time I connect the player to the car stereo via usb, the player displays the charging message and no amount of pushing buttons changes this.

can the NWZ-S639 play music on a car stereo via usb?

How do you get the kenwood car stereo to see it as a storage device rather than just charge it?

Thanks

Craig

It can't unfortunately, because the Sony uses the hated MTP protocol.

The only way is by connecting it via the headphone jack - not ideal, I know.

Apparently, you can buy a Sony charging cradle that allows you to play it as a line out, but I haven't tried this.

That's what I thought.

So I sent an email to sony and got the reply the issue is with the car stereo and if you go on the sony website they list compatable sony car stereos.

I'm waiting for a reply to the question what does the car stereo need to be able to play music from the player.

Thanks

Craig

The isssue is with the player, not the car stereo. There was a similar thread - someone couldn't connect the Sony to their Samsung home cinema system other than via the headphone jack.

Some players offer the option of mtp/ums, the Sony doesn't.

This is reply sony have sent regarding my enquiry

Response (Nick Burbridge)05/08/2009 01.57 PM Dear Mr Holt

Thank you for your recent e-mail received on 26/07/2009 07.35 PM.

The USB lead that is supplied with your Sony NWZ-S639F WALKMAN may be used for playing music on a compatible in car entertainment system.

You will need to check with the manufacturer of your in car entertainment system to establish if they have tested the Sony NWZ-S639F for compatibility, both with USB and Bluetooth.

Yours sincerely

This is the hassle with MTP - if Kenwood says it will work, then it should (I'm guessing they've tested it.)

It's the only bad thing about the Sony - being an MTP player.

Edit: I would have thought Sony would know it's not one of their bluetooth players.

I keep a 16GB thumb drive connected to my Pioneer DEH-P5000UB in-dash receiver and haven't had any problems with that. I never thought about trying to connect my S639 to the receiver. I tried it out this evening and got a "USB N/A" (device not supported) error message on the receiver and my S639 hangs on the "connecting" screen. Bummer. Back to the thumb drive for me.

hmm really? On our bravia tv we have a usb port on the side for photos and music and even though I use my usb key on it, my 818 works just fine and connects to it and I can select songs off it no problem on the tv.

I know we're straying from the original post, but I was curious as to what my S639 would connect to also.

I have a Samsung LN-S2651D LCD TV that has a USB service port in the back that can also be used to connect an iPod. You activate the iPod connection through the TV's menu. When I plugged my S639 in it powered on but wouldn't go past the "connecting" screen. I didn't get any indications on the TV that it was connected, just a "please connect iPod" message.

My Pioneer DV-400V home DVD player also has a USB input on it. My S639 will connect to it and the directories can be searched via the DVD remote control. Constant bitrate MP3's play fine but variable bitrate MP3's will not play at all. Unfortunately, over 90% of my MP3's are VBR. Photos can be viewed. MP4 videos aren't even detected. Xvid AVI's stored on the S639 are not detected by the DVD player even though the DVD player can play them off of a thumb drive. Off topic: I normally keep a 60GB maxtor 2.5" HD connected to my DVD player for movies and TV show storage. It works good and is powered from USB.

OK so this is what kenwood have to say
Hi,

As long as the device conforms to the criteria for ‘mass storage class’ then it should work ok.
(full details here: http://www.kenwood.com/cs/ce/audiofi...0&lang=English)

However, I have had many customers tell me their Sony MP3 players do not work when connected to the USB input on their Kenwood stereos. I think this is largely due to the fact that Sony use their own compression format (ATRAC) which Kenwood stereos cannot play.

Kind Regards,

Previous Sonys did indeed use ATRAC. What Kenwood seem to be saying is that it's the Sony's fault for being MTP (which is true.)

Having read the link in the email from kenwood, the kenwood stereo can only read a single partitioned device.

Formatting the NWZ-S639 does not erase the pre-installed sony files. Suggesting that the device is multi-partitioned - a partition for the sony files and a partition for your files.
