Default New S-series got me interested, have a few walkman questions

My iPod Classic 30GB died a few months ago, so I've been looking to replace it. I want a smaller flash player that I can carry with me easily, hold most of my music (16GB plus but would love 32GB), and NO touch screen. I was actually waiting for the Apple event with hopes they might unveil a 32GB nano (don't hit me!) but I was surprised that didn't happen. I've looked a few of the other flash player makers (Creative, Sandisk) and while they look good on paper, the looks and quality seem really lacking after reading many customer reviews and experiences.

My optimal player would basically be the newest S-series (S540) but with 32GB memory and podcast support, but I'm not sure how often Sony refreshes their players so I'm not sure I want to wait another year. If Sony doesn't have anything else up their sleeves this fall, I could definitely live with a 16GB S-series for now, especially at its fairly low price. I do have a few questions about the S-series Walkman players though:

1. Is there any chance of a new Walkman that's closer to my needs coming out this fall? (32GB, no touchscreen, $200ish)

2. If I got a 16GB S-series, is the biggest difference between the 2 generations that the old has podcast support/Sense me and the new removes those but has speakers? Is audio quality and battery life about the same?

3. Do either S-series gen Walkman players support rating songs on the player? (the 5 star rating you can see in windows explorer, windows media player)

4. Does anyone else happen to use J. River Media Jukebox and know if syncing it with the S-series Walkman players works? If so, do the playlists created by Media Jukebox work as well?

Thanks! This seems to be a great place to get (non iPod) mp3 player advice!

1. count on it

2. see this thread http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum...ad.php?t=47187 there is a new walkman S due in a few weeks time or so, with noise cancellation and podcast support, audio quality is probably on par with older walkmans and battery life is probably better.

3. no rating system on the player unfrotunately.

4. not sure I have no used J. River Media Jukebox but if it works with other drag and drop players then it will work with the walkman.

I have no experience with the previous generation S-series, or J.River, and I don't use playlists or ratings.

So all I can really say is that the sound is excellent, and the battery life seems to be as well.....I only got mine the other day, and I have not had to plug it in to charge, given the charge it receives when I am adding content ( I had to unload a bunch of tunes today to embed the album art, then re-load them, so it got charge then.)

I think for the money it's a pretty nice deal, and I have a Clip for podcasts.

I'm using J.River Media Jukebox to put my playlists on my S639 as I type this, so J.River works great w/a Sony DAP.

@mrsack: See post #2 in this thread regarding podcast support in the S639 (last year's 16GB model). From what I've read the S545 (the new 16GB model) removed Podcast support, so if you plan on playing podcasts I'd either wait for whatever the new model might be and hope for the best, or get last years S639.

And thanks for doing some research on your own before posting your questions (seriously).

So I'm guessing the sweet mystery 32GB is not the new S-series spied in Japan? Any idea when we might hear something about it?

Sweet! I recently moved to J.River because I got tired of all the extra iTunes bloatware, good to know it should work with a Walkman

Yeah, if another Walkman announcement is only a month or so away I will probably just wait and see. No prob for doing some research, I always do tons of research before I buy stuff so I've lurked around this forum a bit in the last day or so before registering :P
