my NW-S205f won't show up on my laptop!

I got it on ebay (i know) and it didn't come with anything but the player. Have found a USB lead and plugged it in and it charged but did not show up as a removable disk in my computer, and even the sonic stage software (downloaded from sony's own site) won't find it. Been at this all day and it's driving me mad.

I found the advice on son's website strage as my computer->'manage' is certainly not a valid shortcut on my computer and i've never seen it before, nor does device manager seem to be what they are talking about!

Please help me get it working!

ETA: My laptop is a dell netbook running XP home, less than a month old.
