On the Samsung site the P3 is said to take almost all video without having to convert, is this true?
I'm looking for a player that takes as little conversion as possible, after spending so much time converting for Cowons, Sony. Just bought an Apple itouch, thinking I could just watch video on wifi, but the reception is so bad it can't pick up a good signal on my wireless lan, when all my computers can. I'll be returning it. Thanks, Hollie |

Pretty much any mp4 you can find will play on the P3 without conversion.

Cowon S9 doesn't need conversion either. So you looked at bad Cowons^^

I had a Cowon S9 and it does need conversion, unless they changed the firmware since last Spring, it doesn't support play H.264 without major conversion time. Videos have to be the right size too.
Also had a D2. Loved the sound quality though. From the Samsung P3 site: "That’s why along with other video formats we designed the P3 to also support DIVX. Not only is DIVX the most popular format, it’s also the fastest and easiest to download. After a firmware upgrade you just download directly to your P3. Then view them in full 16:9 format. You can even capture or bookmark your favorite scenes. With the P3 your wait is over." Hollie |

Most formats that are out there do not require any conversion. DivX is, like the site said, the best though. I think some people have mentioned problems with H.264. WMV has to be the right image size as well. Most videos do not need conversion, but some require just some toying with.

the only file format that I can think of that the P3 does not play is mov...
the only real limitation to the P3's video playback is the resolution limit. however, pretty much any "iPod video converter" will do the trick if you do happen to run into a larger than supported video...

From the looks of it, as of firmware 2.07 the P3 supports Baseline MPEG4 AVC (H.264) at 480x320 which means that any video encoded for iPod touch should play just fine on the P3 without conversion.
Though high resolution stuff above 480x320 will likely not.

Thanks for the information. I'll have to get along without video until something comes along, I just can't justify the time I spent encoding in the past. Maybe the M1 will work.
I'm just using my Sansa Clips but do miss some video. Hollie |

What exactly is your content encoded in?
More importantly, do you realize that essentially no mobile player is capable of playing high resolution h.264 content? It's a processor and a battery thing. To my knowledge, there is not a single smallish PMP that will play any high resolution h.264 content, and there aren't really any prospects in the near future either.

. alas i was in the same situation as hollie9.. got really tired of converting vid's and for some reason i could never get them to come as good as quality as the source. but this is why i love samsung players because no conversion necessary! i think the m1 is best on the market right now as far as video support. not to mention the beautiful OLED screen.
