Cruncher: I tried than file on several of my device, and the ONLY thing that would play it with no dropped frames or audio cut-outs was my Archos 5 w/android and the paid codec upgrade. This includes my PC, and not even quicktime could handle it on my 6 year old PC. That 1280 x 720 MP4 file is certainly a challenge for any device. My Zune software wouldn't even recognize it as a valid file, despite the fact it's supposed to handle 720p files and does handle 640 x 360 MP4s.

Who says that ? Samsung showed on the keynote exactly those differences between the M1 (HD capable) and R1 (SD) and WMV 720p plays fine as shown in a youtube Video floating arround (Amazing Caves WMV-HD)

It was exactly done for that also Rk2806 test already showed that it's not up to the task
Only Tegra could have enough Power to achieve this though the Firmware has to support it in the first Place and that's what i would like to know for the M1 as i hope it's Firmware is not as restricted as Microsofts Zune HD, where in front also their Software already checks this and it's not even reaching the Decoder as pure input
Btw you don't need to pay to play this on your Archos 5 IT just register the Device and you get H.264 for free

Olley thx again for testing could you also please list all the Devices you tried it on and which Chips those are based on if you know it ?
Especially those marketed as 720p Devices

That video link plays fine on my computer in VLC v1.0 & iTunes v 7.3.2

It does not play in WMP with it's native codecs. I'm using Win7 it supports MP4/has the necessary codecs for it by default. It mentions something about the ID3 tags being not proper or something when I click Web Help as to why it doesn't play it.

I am getting M1 this christmas i know i will be happy
P2 has been heavy used for 2 years now and have been very happy with it too
ofcourse i have K5 also from 2006 that still work perfectly

i think this is mp4 720p??? i tested it and not worked
then i tested mkv 720p and the player even not detected it,
then i tested wmv 720p and its worked! (i think the youtube one was also wmv 720p?? )

sorry, i don`t have any knowledge and experience for video related thing in player, just want to help

i think M1 support wmv 720p but not mp4 720p or mkv 720p container, with or without .h264 codec ??

My Zune HD and my Archos 5 Android could both play that 1280 x 270 WMV file. The Cowon S9 doesn't. The Samsung P3 doesn't. The Latte Espresso doesn't. The iriver SPINN doesn't. The iriver P7 doesn't. The Latte Cafe doesn't. The Latte iVu doesn't. Although none of those that didn't claim they would play HD videos.
