Default Screen Replacement X-Fi

Hi all,

I'm a long time lurker first time poster!

I recently broke my XFi, the screen just cracked while in my pocket. After a long time searching for a new screen I have finally located a website which sells them! The problem I have now is changing the screen.

I have bad luck with screens, recently I broke the screen on my Nokia 5800 (it fell off a table and cracked, but I had the white screen of death anyway so wasn't too angry) and I fixed it quite easily.

I looked thru the disassembly guide for the XFi here and took apart mine to get a feel for it, there's 1 piece I'm not confident with. The ZIF connector is simple, but there is a large "golden" metallic-ish thing (I really don't know how to describe it) which is soldered onto the inners and then it literally sticks on to the LCD's connector.

The thing I'm talking about can be visibly seen here:
(The big gold thing in the middle)

Can anyone tell me what this is, what it does and why it is just seemingly stuck to the LCD!? To change the LCD do I just hope this sticks to the new one?
