"Playback Error" but only sometimes/some tracks

And the kicker is I did the cleanup, it kinda freaked out and erased all the music, kept video. So I figured Id reformat since I now have nothing to loose.
So everything was ok till lastnight, had one song on an album give me the "Playback Error" message again, and then proceed to get really slow and locked up. After a moment it lets me play the next song, all seems well.
Now my general prognosis would be my HD is facing its last days, but could it be something else? I will also add that this thing has been dropped more than once, and somehow survived each time (got stepped on, broke one screen). maybe the abuse has finally added up to some HD damage? (although no abuse as of recently)

Could well be HD damage. I would suggest trying to reload/update the firmware on the device rather than just formatting the data. That way you can be sure you have ruled out the software side of things.
