Default MTP device notification with KDE4

Using your MTP device on Linux is now possible. But the Desktops software suites are not always ready to help you.
After successfully managing to help my system to use my dual protocol music player as MTP only, I need my PC to react everytime I connect my device to the USB plug.
MSC devices are automounted in Gnome, KDE4 opens a very MS-Windows like dialog box in order to help you choose what you will do with your device. But you will not see that for your great MTP player!

I have a solution for KDE4. Your need to add your player and programs dedicated to it to the Device Actions configuration in the Advanced section of the KDE4 System Settings. The Solid KDE4 device manager sub-system take care of the events.
Here is my illustrated guide:
  • Open the Device Actions panel in the KDE4 System Settings manager

  • Add a new device action

  • Name the new action
In our example we will type: Manage MTP device with Amarok.

  • Fill the command field
For the command, we will type: amarok.

  • Edit the defaults 2 test parameters to set them to identify our MTP device

Conditions are ordered in a tree.
2 conditions must be children of the root condition whose text is:
All of the contained conditions must match

Condition 1: Our device must support mtp protocol

Fill the form as illustrated above and press OK.

Condition 2: Our device must be supported by libmtp

Fill the form as illustrated above and press OK.

Finished configuration screen

Press OK and the system will record the new notification rules.
You must restart your computer in order to see your new notification enabled.

You can add more notification options for your MTP device with the same syntax. You just need to change the title and command line.

See it in action!
When the device in plugged:

Your options (as configured in my PC):

If you are interested in another way to do it, using plain text configuration files, go to my blog page (Google traduction)

Enjoy your MTP device with KDE4!
