While the Clip+ is very durable and will survive a couple of drops on the ground, it will not survive a kayaking trip, if it gets wet. As of Rockbox....if you install the latest version (3.7) through the Rockbox Utility, you should have no problems whatsoever. And yes, Rockbox is more functional than the stock firmware, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND it

I personally think you should go with the 4GB one...it doesn't cost much, and our music collections are always expanding
. About the shuffle or Sony....while Sony makes good players, I have never heard of that particular model, so I'm going to for once recommend the iPod Shuffle. Of course...a 4GB Rockboxed Clip+ will beat both of those, no comparison

I wouldn't take it where it can get wet at all. It is more user friendly after rockbox, though it has a learning curve many people seem to fear. I have never heard of a report of bricking due to rockbox, just people failing at following instructions and having to try again to get it running.

You can always pick up a cheap clip refurb and use it with this

Rockbox does indeed have a little bit of a learning curve, but trust me, after playing around with it for about a week or two, it will be flawless, right now I am loving all of the shortcuts etc. that Rockbox has, and once you get the hang of it, I think its easier than the stock firmware.

Great choice
! Also a good idea to play around with the stock firmware before installing Rockbox, many people will find that they don't need all RB's features, after all, the Clip+ is the number one small music player. Just make sure that you have a good pair of headphones with it , and you'll be all set!

Ultimate Ears? They work just fine...but I've personally never tried any Ultimate Ears myself. As of amps, I can't help you there, don't use 'em....but I'd suggest posting a thread in the headphones section to find a nice pair of headphones, post your requirements, and you should get some pretty good help, I can also help you out if you let us know your requirements

You won't need an amp for the metro fi 100. I've never used them before and i haven't read anything about them.

For kayaking, put it in a waterproof DAP pouch. Available at meritline.com and elsewhere, inexpensive.
