[Reverted] Increase In Battery Life On The AMS V1 Sansa

Edit: According to saratoga this patch had to be reverted due to SD issues. It is no longer part of the standard build.

I was poking around in the Rockbox 4 Week Changes yesterday and came across this.

r28834: FS #11765: Improve AMSv1 Battery Life by Lowering CPU and Peripheral clocks. Unboosted CPU and peripheral clock is now 31MHz. Boosted CPU and pclk are 186MHz and 62MHz, respectively.

I hadn't run a battery bench on my V1 Fuze in a few months so I decided to test it out.

It brought about a respectable increase in battery life on my V1 Fuze. It took a jump from 14hrs. 46 mins to 16hrs 18 mins. Since I haven't done a battery bench in quite a while I don't know if there were other patches or codec optimizations applied that affected battery life between then and now .

One other difference that might be significant is that the older test was done using -q 5.5 Vorbis. The one from yesterday was done with v4 LAME. I'm just not sure how much the codec difference would impact the battery life but they both sound the same to me. I'll try with Vorbis again soon to see if it changes much.

I got 2 hours extra almost exactly on the Fuze V1 with mp3.

A not-so-scientific observation I made, after installing that build, was after my typical night at work, roughly 10% more battery life remained, which is nice.

Charging my V1 Clip to test it on. Have you had the opportunity to do the .mp3 optimizations you mentioned before? I'm just wondering if you had if that's also having an impact on battery life.

I put the ARMv4 ones in already, but they're fairly minor.

The big stuff is all ARMv5, and so will only work on Clipv2, Fuzev2, Clip+, Android, etc.

Yet again, another reason to regularly thank every single person working on Rockbox.

Awesome...To gain 2 hours on a v1 Fuze model/device which already is probably several years old, with all the commensurate battery wear and tear.

Simply install the new 3.8.1 release and you'll have it.

I think it was actually removed from the current builds because a few people had SD card issues with it. You'd have to apply the patch to the current source and build your own build if you want to try it.

Neither was I Marv. I hadn't done a battery benchmark on a V1 since the time of the original post.

It's not a huge deal for me, because generally I only use it at work, so it only needs to run from 7-9 hours max....but of course any improvement that comes would be nice.

I guess that's why I never noticed the reversion. I just never use it long enough at one time for it to run down on me. I also charge a player just about every time I use it so there isn't a second use that would bring it to my attention.
