Philips PMP - New Look + Gingerbread

Looks like philips is releasing a redone version of their GoGear PMP. It will have access to the android market, and thus like the ipod touch, will have the ability to download apps and games.

The idea is a good one, especially if they manage to pull it off with a decent device. The problem is that most people nowadays aren't terribly interested in a standalone PMP or DAP, it's all about smartphones and convergence. And of those who are interested, they tend to gravitate toward the itouch unless it's something small like an exercise mp3 player.

Therefore, the best way to take a piece of this niche market is going to be (at least at first) based solely upon price - except it's going to cost $179 for 8GB and a to-be-determined amount for the 16GB version. Maybe it'll work abroad, but I'm just not sure that said product is tenable in the US at its price point.

Not sure why the screen is still so small. And why so much bezel bellow the screen?

Just another Archos 32/Creative Touch-2 copy. If the screen is resistive (likely) and 480 x 272 or so it'll be hard to get a foot into the android PMP door.
Archos 43 and the iPod Touch offer a decent web browsing experience with their high resolutions screens. Those screens also bring added joy looking at videos and photos. You can have a 32gb Touch for $295 and an 8gb version for $195. No player that can't seriously challenge its specs is going to make a crack in the U.S. market unless they give them away. JMHO.

It’s always great to see new gear but I agree with you guys it’ll be a tuff uphill losing battle with this gear in the US market …

Attention Android fans who wouldn't be caught dead with an iPod Touch. Philips is breathing some new life into its GoGear line of MP3 and portable media players by introducing the Connect, a new Android 2.3 device.
Due out in September with pricing starting at $179 (8GB), the GoGear Connect is chasing after the same Android-loving customer as the Samsung Galaxy Player. Most importantly, the device will come with Google's suite of mobile apps, including a fully stocked Android Market.

Wasn't the GoGear Connect already on sale here in the UK then pulled, because it was crap and expensive?

Or is this just a newer version with Gingerbread? I agree, though, this can't compete with an iPod Touch or some of the inexpensive but high-spec Android phones from the likes of ZTE.
