Another Zen hard drive Issue.

Hi guys,
I know there have been heaps of threads on ZVM's with dead hard drives, and some come very close to matching by description, but not quite...

The situation is:
When I turn on the Zen with the hard drive attached, I get stuck at the 'ZEN' screen, I can boot into recovery mode with the drive attached, but I cannot run a scan disk.

But, when I turn on the device without the hard drive attached, I still get stuck at the 'ZEN' screen. And from what I have read, without any hard drive plugged in, the device should go straight to recovery mode.
Strangely, though, I cannot always turn off the device from recovery mode. I.e it will come up with the 'shutting down' dialogue, but nothing will happen.

I'm fairly sure the hard drive has died, but I'm wondering if there is another issue, such as a corrupt bootloader or 'Bios'.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I've had the Zen for 5 years, and I would love nothing more than to have it back.
