So is there a good alternative? Possibly same size and design (functionality i.e. easily reachable buttons / can be used even through a t-shirt etc)

Any ideas?

You should look at this and edit your first post to add the additional information so that others can make some recommendations. Yes we're familiar with the U5 specs but what can you live without if a cowon isn't recommended as most cowons should already have the features you want.
