Quick analysis:
LCD: 4.0 -- Better panel, probably a Super LCD (or Super Clear may be Samsung's name). Deeper color, holds color and black levels at wide angles. 5.0 -- Convinced that it's a VA-type panel, based upon shifting gamma at near black. Viewing angles, while wide, suffer from a slight color shift (see what happens to blue) and the black level deteriorates. Sound: 4.0 -- Good maybe slightly better than the 5.0? 5.0 -- Good Battery: 4.0 -- 1200mah, user replaceable, no life info, remaining battery shown as a percentage 5.0 -- 2400mah, user non-replaceable (so they think), slightly over 12 hours, remaining battery shown as a bar. Video: 4.0 -- Brightness can be changed during play 5.0 -- Brightness cannot be changed because the firmware thinks its stuck in auto brightness mode. Camera: 4.0 -- No LED Flash 5.0 -- LED Flash. microSD: 4.0 -- Must remove back cover to access slot. The back however, is user removable -- there is a fingernail slot at the bottom. 5.0 -- Must open small latch to access slot USB: 4.0 -- has small sliding cover for microUSB 5.0 -- no cover for microUSB Buttons: 4.0 -- Volume rocker on left, on/off on right 5.0 -- Volume rocker on right, on/off on right Earphone: 4.0 -- jack on top 5.0 -- jack on bottom Update: Sound issue with 4.0 may have been my mistake, clarified 4.0 back removal. Can you please clarify: On the 4.0 you need to remove the back to change the MicroSD card?

Indeed, that is exactly what he says and exactly what is the case. The back panel must be removed to touch both the battery and the microSD card slot.

I believe that was posted before Texas edited his post...

The user manual PDFs for the Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0 and 5.0 can be found here:
4.0: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/do...s/YP-G1CWY/XAA 5.0: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/do.../YP-G70CWY/XAA The illustrations confirm many of the differences already pointed out here. Does anyone on this thread own a 5.0 and have you been able to get at the battery? Being able to replace the battery was one of the selling points for me, so I need to know whether I'm going to have to mutilate the case to get at the battery. |

I have 5.0. I see no way other than warranty-voiding disassembly.

It was an edit of addition not omission. I added the second sentence in case someone may have been thinking "removing screws" or some other method that may result in the breaking of the back cover.

That's a real shame. The first thing the 4.0 manual tells the user to do is to pop off the back and insert the battery for charging, so I assumed that was also the case for the 5.0. What a disappointment. |

I just returned my 5 a couple of days ago because I just couldn't do the 5 in one hand while working. I'm used to my ipod classic and I think I will try to get the 4. I was actually gonna get the 4 the first time around but the idiot at bestbuy said there wasn't any sd card slot. So I might the 4 tomorrow.

Because of Best Buy's security with a zip tie around the player the back isn't removable by the user to check before purchase. In their defense, the back seems a bit fragile and would probably be broken quickly and someone is likely to steal the battery.
