I'm trying to upgrade to Gingerbread but Kies is stuck on "Connecting..." whenever I plug it in. I'm using 2.0.3.11082_152 and have tried on both 32bit Win XP and 64bit Win7 machines.

I downloaded the Kies Air app and can connect with the PC that way. When I plug it in via USB The computer correctly recognizes it and I can transfer files. The only problem is that whenever I try to get Kies to connect via USB it hangs up on this screen:

As zacp2 said, you need to put it into kies mode to be recognized by the kies software. To do this you need to go to Menu>Settings>Connections, select USB mode and then a list comes up, the first option being "kies mode". Select that and your problem should be gone.
NB My OS language is German, so I'm not 100% sure I translated the menu names as they can be found in the English OS. In any case, you should download and read the manual from Samsung. (not the quick start guide from the box!) |

Yeah, no upgrades for us. It seems that only Korean 5.0s and US versions got it until now. I don't want to speculate, but there's a chance that things will be left like this. The US variant has for example a redesigned home button and could differ in some other hw too.

I guess that's why we got them for $100 less. Probably still worth it.

I have both the Woot Froyo version and the newly released US GB version. Besides the redesigned home button (of which I like the original "hard button" design better because you can use it to wake the device rather than the power button which is your only option with the new design, the former is more convenient when the player is in a car cradle, for example), the new player has some different icons notably on the FM Radio app and possibly a few different native apps. Hardware benchmarks the same for both using AnTuTu. Quadrant gives screwy results for the GB version (double the score, doesn't make sense). Finally, I noticed that the native media player version on the GB version is missing some of the more advanced equalizer and ambiance settings that are on he Woot Froyo version of the player. Bottom line is that I prefer the Woot player over the US version even with GB on the US version.

Thanks for the GB update links - besides the OS upgrade, did any other features of the player change? I am concerned about the audio controls getting dumbed down like they are on the US version. Thx.
