Help HDD died / changed - now want the 59 classical Beijing Tracks back [Solved]

Hi,

first of all: I got the Creative Zen Xtra since 2003 - so the HDD ran almost 8 years - WOW!

Some weeks ago it suddenly died. I mean the HDD died. On the one hand it was very bad on the other it was the right time to upgrade the Zen with a 64GB SSD.
I tried to recover my songs from the old HDD but wasn't lucky. All were gone.

That wasn't a big problem cause I got a Backup of my MP3s. But my problem is that I could not Backup the 59 Tracks which came with the Player. I mean the classical tracks played by the Beijing Orchestra. They were locked and could not be copied to the PC.

After that I looked all over the net to get these tracks. Now I know that there is a python script to copy these tracks to the PC :

http://multimedia.cx/eggs/creative-nomad-zen-reflections/

Here's a list of all tracks:

I tried to contact this guy at the site above but he didn't answer.

So my question is: Did anyone of you manage to backup these tracks? And if yes, could you please upload them for me at a filehoster?

It would be so nice!

Thank you in advance, INDAVO

Crap Indavo...This will be zero help to you but I have 2 of those players. 2 problems:
- both are in NYC at the moment;
- and I thought I had been able to back up those tracks onto one of my computers/USB Drives, but I cannot seem to locate them.

So long ago I'm afraid.

I will continue to try and find them but I would not hold my breath waiting for me if I were you...

Do you still have the original software disk? No idea and don't remember, but didn't the disk contain the music?

Default Thanks...

Hi Lestatar,

sounds great, even if it'll take some time.

I just checked the Drivers CD of the Zen Xtra. (Glad, that I found it ).
But Nope. It contains only 240MB of Programs and Manuals .

So thank you for your reply. I can't wait to hear from you.

Thanks in advance, INDAVO

Hello INDAVO

I have just bought a used Nomad Jukebox 3 in good working order. I already have too many MP3 players, but the NJ3 was my first MP3 player and I have felt a bit nostalgic and wanted to own one again. It's too big for portable use nowadays, but I will use it at home with my stereo (the line out and wireless remote will work great for that purpose).

The former owner left all the music on and the music you are looking for is included. I tried to copy it off the player, but no matter what software I use (Nomad explorer, Notmad explorer), the music cannot be copied from the player to the computer. There is a lock symbol on the tracks so you are probably not supposed to back them up to your computer. I'll look around if there are any work arounds for this...

Hello Danneq,

thanks for your reply.
In my first post there was a link to a page where this guy called "Multimedia Mike" managed to copy these tracks. I think it has to do with the Python Scripts:

http://multimedia.cx/eggs/creative-n...n-reflections/

There are also links to the scripts for download. But I don't know if you have to run these scripts under Linux or Windows.

Thanks in advance.

Hi INDAVO,

Thanks for the tip and link. I'll take a shot at it this weekend and try to get everything ready by the start of next week.
I'll send you a PM when I'm finished.

Well, I think I have to add some more time. The python script seems to work the best on Linux machines. It can work on Windows machines (I am using XP), but you need some sort of python software to run the script.
Then it seems like you have to open the MP3 player up, remove the HDD and plug it into a HDD USB connector. As long as it is in the Nomad, the computer will only interact through the Creative firmware on the Nomad. Removing the HDD lets you interact with it without that "middle man".

Anyway, for the moment I am stuck. I have to ty to find that python software, but not having a USB HDD dock for a 2,5" HDD might prevent me from making progress...

Hi Danneq,

ok, that seems to be a bit more difficult than I expected.

First of all, here is the Python Runtime for running the script:

http://www.python.org/ftp/python/2.7.2/python-2.7.2.msi

And the problem regarding the connection of the HDD is another one.
By the time the Nomad and Zen was produced IDE HDDs were up to date.
So I got a 2.5" IDE Adaptor. With this small device one can connect the
HDD directly to the normal IDE Port on the Mainboard.
Perhaps this will be the solution.
I can send you the adaptor via Mail if you're willing to go further with this little project.
But this could take some time as I'm living in Germany.
Or if you want to stop here that wouldn't be a problem for me.
I will then go on and perhaps buy a used Nomad or Zen with all the old Tracks on it and will try it by myself.

Anyway, I thanks for the effort.

@ INDAVO

Thanks for the Python runtime. Now just to the problem of the HDD.

At least as I understand it, I have to take the HDD out of the Nomad and put it in a USB adaptor to skip using the Creative interaction with the computer...

I have a USB HDD connector for 1.8" driver (tried to fix an old Sharp MP3 player with it - didn't work as it turned out to be the HDD that was broken...)

If it is no problem for you, you could always send me the 2.5" USB connector and I could give it a shot.
However, I do not have much vacation this summer, so I only have time on the weekends.

You could always keep an eye out for Nomad players on German Ebay. I have bought some stuff there, for example an iRiver H120 and a Motorola Razr2 cellphone. It can be cheaper than the UK and US Ebay. And the stuff is most often in pristine condition.

So you can consider both things.

I am willing to help you, but it might take some time. If you are lucky, you can find a relatively cheap Nomad player on Ebay...

@ Lestatar. No problems! Too bad that the site I wrote to you about recently shut down. It was great!

Hi @ all,

Okay this is "partially solved" cause Danneq found a Workaround for this.
He recorded all the tracks via line out to a lossless format.
A solution I did not even think about.

So I got the tracks but if anyone manages to get the original files off the device - this would also be great.

So guys, thank you for your help - but keep on.

INDAVO

Talking Finally Solved!

Hi@all.

It's done!
Some weeks ago there was a untouched an not firmware upgraded or formated Creative Jukebox Zen NX at eBay in almost new condition and I won the auction!
All original Tracks were on the device - I'm so lucky!

So I took the player apart and attached the HDD to a 2.5" to IDE Adaptor. So as I'm not a Linux User I just set up a virtual Ubuntu machine in VMware an connected the NX drive as a second drive.

I prevoiusly downloaded the zenrecovery Python scripts and startet them in a shell.

And wow! It just did what I always wanted. It copied all the tracks off the Creative HDD. Even tracks that were deleted and not shown by the player itself.

So I now got all the 59 Beijing Tracks in untouched quality @ 320Kbps with all ID-tags and so on.

Though thanks to everyone who was involved in this.

If anyone wants to do the same here are the python scripts:
