Confused about install of Rockbox to Zip

Hi I am confused about how to install Rockbox to a Zip is it simply dragging two folders to the root of the Zip?

Sorry for such a newbie question, Rockbox looks great.

Yes and you can get them here but I would definitely recommend you read the installation instructions in the manual and skim some of the information first. The Clip Zip manual isn’t completely up yet but you can look at the Clip "+" manual as it’s not that different.

Edit: I thought to post some simple instructions: connect Clip Zip in MSC mode, then unzip both files (bootloader is clpza.bin and current firmware build is .rockbox) to the root of your Clip Zip, unplug and allow firmware upgrade on boot up.

**Even though this works and many of us are running it, there is a chance you could brick your player and there's no fix yet AFAIK, so you do so at your own risk.

Okay I've been playing with the emulator to get a feel for Rockbox, I have the same tracks in FLAC and MP3 on the same device which will the database default to?

Don’t know, I’ve never had the same tracks loaded in 2 different formats.

Yeah, I just tried it on my system it wouldn't be like that on the device I was just curious which it was decoding

Instructions you just gave are very easy to do, how easy is it to return to newest stock firmware?

Enjoying using the Emulator anyway.

Just as easy IMO, remember you can dual boot either to the OF by holding back button as you boot or to rockbox not holding anything other than powering on.

To go back to OF without rockbox, unzip a current OF to the root, delete the .rockbox file in the root of your player and do a firmware update.

I would rather not sticky a simple guide, the official one is simple enough and it is a sticky. When I unplug the player, it says firmware upgrade in progress and then turns off. When I turn it back on it is still the Sansa OF (Version: V01.01.18A).

Any idea what I may be doing wrong? Any help is appreciated, I feel like I'm hitting my head against a wall.

Did you unzip the files to the root of the player? Did you make sure you connected in MSC mode? ... More info would help put a finger on it.

Yes, I am connecting in MSC mode. I have tried both unzipping the files directly into the root directory & unzipping the files onto my computer & then transferring the unzipped contents (the .rockbox folder & clpza.bin) to the root directory. I've tried each method several times with no luck.

Did I possibly screw things up with prior installations of Sansa's firmware updates? My understanding is that the "bootloader," clpza.bin, should atone for any previous fiddling I've done with the firmware. Am I mistaken?

Or, do I need to use a microsd card to use Rockbox?

Or, is there something in my Windows XP settings that is handling the Clip Zip connection strangely?

Or, have I downloaded the wrong combination of files?

That's pretty much all I can figure. I'd appreciate any help.

It should look like this after extracting (highlighted files and folders):



Then you can disconnect and restart the Zip, and the firmware should get updated with the Rockbox bootloader.

I have also deleted the DID.bin file and tried. Does it look like I have something extra or am missing something?

Make sure thats the patched clpza.bin and not an original. If you flash an unpatched one, you'll get the result you described.
