Default Alternative Operating System?

I love my p3 so far, but it feels like an unfinished product. The main menu lags, scrolling through music is a pain and most other features seem like novelty items.
So I was wondering if you can put a different OS on it. Samsungs OS is probably the best I could get, but just checking.

PS: Is multi-touch software or hardware based?

I think you mean firmware vs os, most of the best information you can find in our Samsug P3 forums here, also you can go to samsung fw here.

No I didn't mean firmware, I mean something like Rockbox but for a P3.

Also the p2 looks vastly superior to the p3 in terms of the GUI.

Rockbox is firmware, it's just an alternative open source firmware, but not it's not available for the p3 or p2.

this has been covered before. no.
(sadly.. I, like you, really wish the rock box or android could run on the P3, but nobody that I know knows enough to make it happen)

Samsung has moved into Android on it's phones now. I expect an Android based PMP from them at CES.

That might be nice, but even if they do release an android PMP it won’t help the OP’s request for alternate firmware for the p3.

loganbook201 What firmware do you have right now?

Things like those you mentioned shouldn't happen to you if you're running firmware 2.20. My P3 is fast enough and works like a charm.

I am running 2.20. Just seems like the whole thing is sluggish. Reinstall mabey?

Whats the difference between a Os and a Firmware?
I know an os is like vista or xp.

Are there any GUIs for the p3. Similar ones like the p2 would be sweet.

Right now there aren't any alternate firmwares for the P3...sorry...

However, there are some small things you can do to make the P3 slightly faster: turn off the menu sounds, turn off unnecessary widgets, and of course, update the firmware.

They won't make a huge difference, but it might help a bit.

Nice tip! turning off widgets did help make the main menu faster! Now only if scrolling though music wasn't so tacky.

Thanks Walkgood for that info!

Here's another useful tip:

Go to Settings, and turn Transparency completely off. Music scrolling will be noticeably faster.

There's not an alternative "GUI" on the P3 like the P2. But there's no difference, really. The "GUI" you change on the P2 Settings just merely modifies the home screen. The navigation interface is always the same no matter what "GUI" you apply on the P2. There's really no "GUI" change, just home screen change; and the P3 already does that better with customizable UCIs.

Another thing. Some UCIs increase the home screen speed. That's mostly because UCIs don't include widgets, but others are fast because they are just minimalistic. So you might want to consider getting a few, there are some really cool ones. However, now that the new SDK UCIs 2.0 can include widgets, the home screen can suffer performance loss if the home screen is bloated with useless widgets that are designed to match that UCI's skin, so just try each one out, and keep those you like.

Page i hope i haven't missed anything...

the P2 has sort-of been 'hacked', but progress has stalled. the p2 used an application called FWDN.exe to upload non official firmware images to the P2 when it's in recovery mode*. there was a full repair information kit (in pdf + FWDN.exe) for the p2 found on samsungs site that the 'hackers' downloaded (i don't know how they did this though).

*this is exactly how the P3 can be put into recovery mode, pressing reset again exits this mode. the only problem is we dont have a copy of FWDN.exe for this version of the telechips processor that the p3 uses (i've tried the older version and it didnt upload anything)

one last thing... this recovery mode is actually hardware based and not software based, and is built into the CPU by telechips and not samsung.

* recovery mode is entered by pressing reset then releasing(makes sure it's off), then pressing and holding reset whilst pressing and holding power, then releasing reset first then power. To exit press reset when done.

Yeah, they started porting Rockbox to the P2. I'm pretty excited for when they actually start doing something beyond just saying they're going to, because not only would it mean the first touch-screen PMP to run Rockbox, but that also means that they may make a port for the P3 soon afterwards.

AFAIK, the D2 was the first touch-screen PMP to get it ... but, yes it's nice to hear they're working on it ...

Very cool! I look forward to Rockbox!( if it even gets ported).

Don't think this is worthy for a new thread so I will ask it here.
Whats the best looking UCI that you have come across?
Im looking for something to show off.

Oh. Guess I should actually look in-depth into some of the players they support. xD
