Lithium batteries can be damaged by remaining discharged for too long. That may have happened with your player. There's also a chance that the battery needs to slowly charge for a while to "reset" itself to be able to take a full charge. There's just no telling either way.

I've brought a couple of batteries back to life by using a USB wall charger that produces the standard 5 volts. I let them stay connected for a day or so then disconnected and reconnected them.

You could try that and see if it helps here. Unfortunately I've had many more that stayed dead.
