![]() Samsung probably doesn’t come to mind when you think of social networks. The South Korean manufacturer intends to change that, however. A report in The Korea Times claims that Samsung Electronics will introduce a new social network, internally known as “Samsung Facebook,” before the end of the first quarter of 2013. Samsung already has its ChatOn messaging service, and the company is working on Family Story, which allows people to chat, share photos, and receive reminders. Samsung Facebook would expand upon this, making it into a full-fledged social network. The core service will also be integrated with Amazon’s cloud computing platform. According to an unnamed Samsung representative, “The eventual goal is to expand our social media service across different devices from different companies across different mobile platforms. That includes cameras, televisions and blue-ray (sic) players.” Introducing a new social network is relatively easy, but attracting and keeping users around is much more difficult. Will being able to access it on cameras, TVs, and Blu-ray players be enough to help Samsung’s social network survive? [The Korea Times via The Verge]

A quick follow-up: It looks like Samsung is now claiming that the report in The Korea Times is "groundless." Here's the official statement.
