how is the battery life with Rock Box on the zip Clip?
I am wondering because i read that the battery life is crippled by 5 hours or so. |

I don't think anyone tested the zip, but its basically the same player as the clip+, which gets a couple hours extra in rockbox.

usually estimated at around 15-16 hours.

That only applied to the ancient v1 Clip, and only before the battery got optimized some more. Clip v2, Clip+, and Clip Zip all got better battery life with Rockbox than with stock firmware.

Months ago, in a fairly unscientific test, I compared my Clip Zip with an early build of Rockbox, and the battery life went from just short of 12 hours to just over 15 hours. That was with strictly MP3 files, though...the SanDisk firmware gives terrible battery life with the other formats so the difference is much greater in favor of Rockbox then.

Running daily build 9f7c6a1 on my Clip zip. Today I tried to install latest daily build but cannot get a USB connection. Whenever I insert the USB cable I get:
Data abort at 30FSR 0x8 (domain 0, fault address 0xDEADBE bt pc: 3006B1FC bt end It still runs ok on build 9f7c6a1, but I cannot get a USB connection. Ten tries all give the Data abort error. It willl boot with the Sansa firmware, but I can not get MSC USB to show up on my computer to remove the RB build. How do I remove the 9f7c6a1 build? Update: I was able to get a USB connection. All previous attempts were with the ClipZip turned off, After a 20 sec long reset to recover from the Data Abort error, I powered up the ClipZip and then inserted the USB cable. After three tries with the CLipZip turned ON, I got a USB connection and re-installed an earlier build 0fd0494 That does not exhibit the USB Data Abort error. I made new virtualbox image for compiling rockbox. This one should be ready to go without installing anything. Its also 70MB smaller then the old one. Hopefully it'll be much easier for people who want to compile on Windows without knowing much about linux.

I have not tried an updated build for a while now, but there is definitely an issue with USB mounting while on Rockbox. It only works around 10% of the time. Rest of the time it hangs or shows a stop screen similar to the one Autofils got, and it's extremely annoying. Yesterday it got to the point where I just gave up and mounted via the stock firmware (and had to suffer through 2 minutes of it refreshing the database)

This is a question about file encoding and effect on battery life, so I don't know if I should post here or elsewhere.
In any case, I've been experimenting with using speex format (with audiobooks) to save space. However, I feel that playing the speex files may be draining the battery more quickly than playing the mp3 files I converted them from. Is this possible/likely? I have been creating fairly high quality speex files - could this be having a negative effect on battery use? (i.e. would it be better to create more highly compressed speex files instead?) Specifically, I've been converting the mp3s to "wideband" 32k wav files, and then converting those wav files to speex using "speexenc" with the following settings: "--quality 10 --comp 10 --nframes 10". |

The speex documentation I read indicated that one needed to convert from wav to speex. Is there a better way of doing this? Also, when you say "this can have a negative effect on battery life", by "this" do you mean speex files, or speex files with better quality settings, or ? |

The other question/remark is that it doesn't look there are standardised speex test files at the moment. |

Yeah, since I'd never tested speex, it didn't occur to me to make test files for it. Since its a voice codec, I'm not sure it really makes sense to use it with our standard test track anyway.

Does anyone know a fix for a full directory buffer? I've ripped about 25 cds to flac yesterday and then converted them to mp3 for my portable use. Now I get this message whenever i go to files "dir buffer full" any help is appreciated.

Anyone else experiencing periodic clicks during playback after installing RockBox on this device? I've installed version 74af18e-120617 of RockBox, and I get clicks in the right channel every few seconds. The volume of the clicks depends on the playback volume, I'm listening through a pair of Sennheiser CX300 II earbuds. It's pretty annoying

I have no idea what's causing your clicking issue but I haven't experienced that since the original release on the v1 many moons ago. Did you compile your own build?
