![]() Samsung has started an interesting initiative in which it will pay you as much as $300 to get rid of your old smartphone – provided you use that money to upgrade to a Samsung device. This promotion, which is being done in conjunction with Clover Wireless, allows you to send in your old smartphone (from nearly any brand, including Samsung) and proof of purchase for a full or partial refund within 30 days. Samsung will also let you keep your old accessories like power cables, batteries, etc. While the website suggests upgrading to one of Samsung’s popular Android devices like the GALAXY S II, GALAXY S III, or GALAXY Note, the promotion applies to the company’s entire line of smartphones. So if you have a Nokia Lumia 900 Windows Phone, you could easily trade it in for $200 and pick up a Samsung Focus S or Focus 2. Both devices are well under the $200 price point. The original Samsung Focus, however, will only net you $200. The iPhone 4S, by comparison, will get you $300 for the 64GB version or $230 for the 32GB version, while the HTC One X rates at just $175. If you’ve been thinking about picking up a Samsung smartphone, now might be the time to do it. How much is your current smartphone listed for? [Samsung Upgrade via Mashable]

Kind of a joke, as these sort of upgrade things usually are.

I don't even get why this is such a big media thing? I guess its not usually a manufacturer that offers a trade in on an old phone but lots of operators and retailers do. These phones usually go to mass refurbishment companies that sell older phone models to developing countries and such.

Why not just ebay your old phone and get more money for it?
That deal sucks. |

I guess most people think their phones value is what they had to pay for it upon signing a contract. So getting 10-20$ on a 2 year old subsidized 100$ phone might seem like a great deal.

There's a certain amount of convenience to the deal, too.

Depending on what your old phone is, you might not get much for it at all.

Yea, and you probably wouldn't get much if any more from Sammy for it.
